Because the paper placed in front of him was not a test. It was not a skill check, a speech, or even something as dastardly as a pink slip. For sure, it was a survey, but not for anything a respectable business would ask its employees. At least, that’s what the Mydei of five minutes ago thought.
Protagonist Attractiveness Survey.
What the fuck.
He rubbed at his eyes in what he hoped was a discreet manner. Then, he took his glasses off to stare at it some more. Unfortunately, the bold lettering stubbornly refused to melt into something more palatable, like “How would you rate your pay out of ten?”
It stared back at him. Protagonist Attractiveness Survey. Curse his life. No, really. Curse his damned, god-forsaken life.
Hosting a survey to decide a movie protagonist's dashing looks based off Mydei's department's taste in men was stupid, much less professional, but it happened. And it apparently required a sacrifice—now, Mydei had to deal with much worse than late storyboards and nosy coworkers. Like an eldritch horror, a tyrant king... oh, and his middle school OC.

“Okay then, hero,” Phainon smiles brightly, standing up, flower crown in hand, snow-white hair haloed by the sun. His hands raise, and a weight settles on Mydei’s head. “Remember me when word of your tales spread.”
Mydei stiffens and immediately takes it off.
“Do you not want it?” He asks, holding the flower crown back out. “You made it.”
Phainon laughs, “It’s yours now. I already have too many.” The boy takes Mydei’s outstretched hand and directs it back to his blonde head, letting the crown fall from unsteady fingers into unruly locks.
“Then–” Mydei stutters, “May I give you this in return?”

or: Mydei doesn't know the worth of flowers in Kremnoan Culture, but once he becomes King, he vows to make his first crown mean more than sentiment.
