If he were sober, he might have recognized how catastrophically bad this idea was. That the roulette ball was not a sign, that they’d been playing for over an hour and it was bound to land on twenty-four eventually. But there was a buzzing warmth flooding his veins and a very loose grip on his rationality, so he headed away from the bar, through the lobby, and out onto the balmy Vegas strip. He leaned against a shadowed wall and scrolled to a contact he’d hovered over a thousand times before.
This time, he called.
Or: Five years after Rose helped Shane come to terms with his sexuality, he’s done everything else on his own. Coming out, surviving the backlash, being traded to Ottawa. When the dust finally settles, Shane meets a nice guy from Montreal and tells himself he’s ready to move on. He’s definitely not thinking about Ilya. Or Ilya’s gorgeous Russian wife. Not at all.

Summary
“Wait, Mr. Raiders fan,” Rozanov calls.
Constable Sullivan pauses.
“I get a phone call, yes?”
“Sure.” He pulls out his own phone. “Do you know the number?”
Rozanov nods. The numbers all come out in a rush, as though he’s memorized it in one long string and can’t think of any of them separately.
It’s a Montreal area code, the constable notes, as he types it in. As the phone rings, he puts it on speaker and asks Rozanov: “Who is it?”
“Shane Hollander.”
“Fuck off. Who is it really?”
Or: in the midst of the Rose breakup, the Raiders win a game in Montreal. Unable to do what he normally does after Montreal games, Ilya goes out to a club, gets super drunk, and ends up getting picked up by Montreal police for public intoxication. Sitting in a holding cell, the only number he can remember is Shane's.

‘You know, if you came back from lunch on time and didn’t take so many smoke breaks, you wouldn’t have to stay late every day.’
‘It is bad luck in Russia if you do not smoke at twenty five minutes past hour, every hour you are awake.’
Shane frowns. ‘Wait, really?’
Ilya slowly turns to look him in the eyes, dead serious. Then he blinks. ‘No, of course not.’
Shane huffs and focuses back on his monitor. ‘Fucking asshole.’
‘You may find me doing this some weekends, yes.’Or, Ilya decides when he gets back from lunch, no one else.
