“Look out!”
Hosea's warning came a fraction of a second to late. Pain lanced up his arm, teeth digging deep into his flesh as the beast latched onto him, dragging him down. He was falling—sliding rather, rolling; tumbling down, the world about him a mess of snow and fur and blood and pain. And then a shout—something, he couldn't quite make out the words, but his arm was covered in red and he was gasping for breath, sprawled out on his stomach.
His head hurt.

They were supposed to be keeping their heads down. Maintaining a low profile. Hosea reminding them as much when they had left him behind at camp. Arthur could remember Dutch grinning, reassuring him that they would. Insisting that they were just going to test the waters. See if there were any fish worth catching.
It's what they had done.
