Summary
The first thing he does before Dio comes to visit is to cover his window up. The old curtains were white and gauzy, the kind of things that barely kept out any light. They matched with the the rest of the house, all purchased and installed at the same time. Pucci doesn't even remember when exactly that happened. When he was young probably, whenever mother had last brought in an interior decorator to change things.
When he changes his curtains, he doesn't tell her. Pucci folds them up and puts them in the linen closet so they can put up again once he moves out. The replacements are dark and heavy, so thick that they blot out all the light once you shut them. When they're drawn and the light in his room is off, the room is a dark as the corridors within Dio’s mansion.
Even before Dio arrives, he starts to keep them drawn to get used to it. Nobody notices. Nobody says a thing.

Diego wheezed against the gag in his mouth. His ankles and wrists were shackled to the bed by thick rope, which burned at his skin. He furrowed his brows and fought against the restraints, huffing. He gave Valentine his most impressive glare, and grumbled something against the rag stuffed into his mouth.
"Right, right," Valentine said, as if he understood a word that Diego said. "You're absolutely right. This is the sort of punishment a traitor deserves."
(Diego gets stuck in a very erotic purgatory as the two Valentines stroke each other’s egos.)

It starts as simple fascination. Pucci discovers that though Vanilla Ice guards the way to the third floor, he can still be slipped around. His guard pattern is methodical as it is predictable and Pucci simply waits until he sweeps the first floor before he heads upstairs, bare feet silently padding over the stone steps.
The first time, he comes just to prove that he can do it at all. He plans on leaving soon after, smug with the knowledge that he had so easily slipped by Vanilla Ice. But he's tempted to push the coffin lid aside just slightly, just to see what Dio looks like inside of it. Does he transform into something horrible? Is there a bat-faced creature in there? Or will he lie like Dracula on silks, face pale white and eyes open and unseeing.

Soon as the sun dies, the cold comes creeping into the mansion, filling every room along with the darkness. Pucci wraps himself in his clothes and his coat, trying to stay as warm as he can while he explores Cairo.
Thankfully there are plenty of things to help warm him up.

Dio always gives the strangest gifts. Pucci hardly understands why he sometimes picks the items he does. Some are more obvious than others, while some tokens are mysteries that he has yet to unravel.
The latest gift is a chain of some kind, made of large gold loops that twist in and out of one another. This could be the kind of thing to wear around your neck. But this chain could hardly be something meant to be worn. The backside of it is covered in exposed wire and spikes meant to stab into the skin, to prick and tear at it.
Dio looks so proud of himself, contented as a cat who's gorged themselves on cream. Pucci looks at it, and then forces himself to admit his own ignorance, asking Dio, "What is it?"

There was a life-sized crucifix at the church Pucci and his parents attended. Every Sunday, as they sat in the pews and listened and sang along tunelessly with the others, his eyes would inevitably drift up to the crucifix hanging high above the altar. On it, Jesus suffered, his body twisted in pain as blood flowed down his wrists and feet where the nails had been driven.
Pucci remembers when it changed. He was seven then, sitting in the back pews with Perla and the other children, when he looked at Christ on the cross and realized that He wasn’t just suffering. Jesus was caught in a moment of transverberation as well, tottering on the edge between agony and ecstasy. Pain and joy were nearly the same when you experienced an overwhelming amount of of either. That much of anything and your body would react so violently and so physically, until the lines between those two blurred and then fell entirely. At seven, he understood that when Jesus lifted his head towards Heaven, it wasn't so God would hear him scream, but so God would hear him cry out as he was reborn.
