"Damn it," Dean coughs, turning his head to spit out another mouthful of blood. "This isn't…going…like I planned."
"So the reckless, renegade cowboy riding into the valley of death thing wasn't the plan?" Cas asks, his tone clipped with annoyance.
"No, the recklessness went perfectly," Dean says, breathing more easily now that his lungs aren't quite so restricted by the mangled remains of his thoracic cavity. "I wanted to deliver some cool line when we got back, though. About gripping you tight and raising you from perdition. But that doesn't work so well when I can't fucking breathe."

“This is really old fairy magic, it’s sealed with true love’s kiss,” Sam explains and turns the page.
They’ve been at this ever since Jack apologized and explained that he has no control over the Empty. Reading, researching, collecting ideas, anything that might get Cas out of there.
“No problem.” The words come out of Dean’s mouth without hesitation.
Sam finally looks at him, visibly annoyed that Dean is questioning his judgement. “You can’t fake that, Dean. The magic won’t work.”
“Yeah. Still not a problem."

Dean knew he didn't have a lot to offer.
He was a recovering alcoholic with complex PTSD and a shit ton of daddy issues which he'd taken out on his own pseudo-kid. He was angry and selfish and destructive. He had a mom he loved but didn't like, a brother he'd pushed away time and time again, a dog that stayed with him only because it didn't know any better, didn't know him.
And he had Cas.
Inexplicably, somehow he had Cas.

Dean’s hand itches for a pencil. He's never really had the desire to draw much. Actually, he’s pretty sure he hasn’t drawn anything beyond turkey hands and shitty family portraits back when he was in elementary school... but seeing Castiel splayed out there, on the bed… Dean grits his teeth, clenches and unclenches his fingers. There’s gotta be a pen and paper somewhere around here, right?
