    Summary

"What are you talking about, Colin?" She managed to express herself—finally. Looking at him from the height of her balcony.

Colin, standing in the middle of the garden, directly below her terrace. His head tilted back, as if he was looking at her on a pedestal. A queen looking down, as he knelt before a statue—except that the statue did nothing but shake her head. In the night, it was easy to get carried away. Especially when you're drunk, which Colin certainly is. He was dizzy and he would surely vomit soon if it went on like this—but to hell if he didn't want to see her.

    "I think you heard me."

    She heard him, definitely.

"Don't marry him..." Colin repeated a third time. And the words fell like a heavy stone from his lips—slobbering his tongue, stumbling with the air. Colin had always been one to act on his impulses. His mouth spoke when his brain yelled at him to stay quiet. That's why he felt such a rush of relief—of release—as he scream something he should have said a long time ago.

    Summary

“All is well now.” She could not help but assure him.

“It is not,” he objected. “All is not well between us at all. I can feel it.”

She could formulate no rebuttal. He was right and it would be dishonest to deny it. She watched him grow more aggravated from her silence.

“You are not at ease with me anymore,” he continued. “Openness once marked our relationship, allowing it to take shape so naturally over the years, but now you rebuke me at the slightest expression of it.”

He was speaking circles around her, failing to make sense. She could not deny things had changed, but his logic dizzied her. Or perhaps that was the warmth of his palm that had shifted down, cupping her neck, as his fingers wove softly into her hair.

Or, they finally confront each other.

After Eloise's discovery of Penelope's secret identity as the scandalous Lady Whistledown, Penelope desperately searches the Ball in hopes of explaining herself to Eloise only to stumble upon another Bridgerton in the midst of destroying their friendship. Colin's hurtful dismissal of Penelope to a group of possible matches knocks him off the pedestal of perfection she'd once placed him on.

With her feelings for Colin crushed, Portia distracted with Prudence and her crumbling relationship with the Bridgerton family, Penelope has finally decided to step out from the backgrounds of society and take charge of her life once and for all, blooming only as a wallflower can.

Will Penelope find herself a match? And how will Colin feel losing a most treasured friendship? Perhaps Violet was right, you must marry the person that feels like your dearest friend.
