Summary
Tess watched as the FEDRA soldiers, in full riot gear, marched their latest round of prisoners out to the center of town. These looked to be Fireflies. At least with this round of executions, there was the small relief that they apparently had the people they wanted and would clear out of this part of the QZ a bit in the coming days.
The crowd looked on silently, not daring to say a word and implicate themselves in some way. Each of the idealistic fools held their heads high, strong resolve tight on their faces as they completed their death march to the gallows. All but the last one, a young woman with a wild look in her eyes. This got Tess’ attention; she knew that look, had felt that desperation.
“Please,” the woman begged, whipping her head to stare into the faceless, emotionless mask of the soldier guiding her to her death. “Please, I have a daughter. She’s just a baby, please,” the woman sobbed, voice raw from what Tess imagined had been hours of interrogation or maybe even just pleading similar to this.
Maybe it was a last-ditch effort to avoid her fate. Something told Tess that it wasn’t.

Summary
Without him consciously telling them to, his knees bend, and his arms are held open wide. Ellie crashes into his chest with a screech.
“What all d’ya got there, kiddo?” He asks, standing and swinging her as she struggles to grip his sleeve with her empty hand.
“Lotsa flowers. Mama says they’re wild, like me,” she explains excitedly.
“Wildflowers, huh?” Joel asks, setting her down and crouching in front of her as she releases her sweaty grip on the smushed, lifeless stems of her little bouquet, transferring them to his much larger palm.
He looks down at the flowers, colorful and already starting to wilt. Crushed in the hands of a rambunctious little girl before they could die on their own accord in the sun once their time was up. To be picked with love and excitement, he thinks, is a much better fate.

He could tell Joel wasn’t telling him the full truth about the girl.
The part that this had started as a job, Tommy was keen to believe. For as long as he’d known him, Joel was never one to turn down a job, especially not if it was going to get him some sort of payment that he couldn’t turn down in return. It just wasn’t exactly clear what the payment was for this particular cargo transport. Whoever the girl was, she was clearly more than a job, more than cargo, and Tommy was going almost exclusively off of his limited interaction with the two of them and the way that Joel pointedly tried to make it appear that he didn’t really care about her.
One thing about his brother that hadn’t seemed to have changed was just how fucking clueless he was as to how obviously he wore his emotions, even if carefully cloaked behind layers of gruff aloofness. Tommy wasn’t so easily fooled.

That girl. It could have just as easily been Ellie. And he couldn’t protect her. Couldn’t keep her from getting ripped apart by infected. Couldn’t get them out of there fast enough, aim well enough, couldn’t kill enough of them.
They’re an hour outside of Jackson, and the whole ride is spent with his thoughts consumed by the girl and the fight with the infected and the fact that they’re going to have to go back out to handle this. He knows Ellie was supposed to have a patrol today, had seen it in the log book. All he can do now is hope she stays on the short patrol path, straight out to Eugene’s old place and right back, especially with this storm still coming down the way it is.

He’s skinny and old, like James, but the uncanny likeness between all three of them is there, even stiffened in death. The stubborn set of the jaws, the forceful cleft chins, the slope of the brows. Bill and James and Jamie all lying dead in a casket and all staring down at a corpse, a shifting, blurring Tartt shadow that pervades the atmosphere, choking everything in its wake.

“Leave it alone, Ellie,” he says, not sure what kind of creature it is that she’s communing with, but absolutely sure that, regardless of what it is, it’s not something she should be getting near.
She pops back into his line of sight, out from behind a bookcase in the science fiction section, a bright grin lighting up her face. She’s holding a goddamn puppy.
