Summary
First time when Buck heard Eddie sing was after when the heavens and earth decided to bury him under 40 feet of dirt. He did what he had to, of course. He clawed the dirt until he could breathe, not knowing someone from above was doing the same thing — but failing.
5 times Eddie sang + 1 time Buck sang back

Summary
“Do you really want to escape from this conversation that much? Because you’ve been, no, we’ve been dancing around it so much that it was only a matter of time someone tripped into it.”, voice calming, honey-like in the quiet kitchen.
“Not my fault that you have two left feet.”, he tries, whispering.
or they finally talk.

Summary
“Did you ever go to Hershey?”
“What?” Eddie asked, thrown. “Why would I go to Hershey without you?” he asked, picking up a dish towel and drying off the plates in in the drying rack.
“When you were younger, I mean,” Buck clarified. “For your ballroom dancing.”
“I think I would—” Eddie paused on his way to grab a new plate, thinking. He met Buck’s face with an equally confused expression and said, “actually, now that you’re saying it . . . yeah.” He looked surprised by his own answer. “Yeah, Tara and I went our junior year. Damn, I can’t believe I forgot about that.”
“I think we met.”
----
In 2008, an unlikely interaction occurred; in 2025, Buck remembers.

Summary
Buck’s hands were roughened and slightly reddened across the knuckles, like he’d been chopping wood or working outside without gloves. There was a fading bruise near his wrist, yellow at the edges. His eyes were bloodshot. There was an unevenness to the stubble along his jaw where he’d either stopped caring halfway through shaving or never started. All surface details. None of them what Eddie actually wanted to know.
How bad is it today? How often do you hurt? What happens at three in the morning when the cabin gets too quiet and your head gets too loud. Do you still count the hours since the last pill or has that stopped meaning anything? When you said you needed space, did you mean from everyone or just from seeing what you’ve become reflected back in our faces?
Buck shifted under the weight of the silence. “Say it.”
Eddie frowned. “Say what?”
“What you came all this way to say.”
OR Buck leaves because he thinks he is a burden, Eddie follows.

Summary
“I have no idea what’s going on.” He was embarrassed at the whiny note in his voice, but he couldn’t swallow it away. “I mean, the last thing I remember, I was telling my parents that I was leaving Texas. And then all of the sudden I wake up and it’s like—”
Like some stranger named Buck had infiltrated every corner of his life. That’s what it felt like.
——
Amnesiac Eddie tries really hard to hate Buck. It doesn’t stick.

Summary
“I'm in love with someone.” Buck admits, his voice quiet but firm. If Eddie wasn't standing right in front of him he might've missed it.
Buck is in love with someone.
Okay.
That's fine. That's cool. Buck has been in love with plenty of people before. Not that they deserved it, or earned it, or were worthy of it in any way at all, but still. This is fine.
Or not.

Summary
He thinks about the city at sunrise. About the way smoke curls when the trucks roll out of the station. About his sister and his niece and nephew curled on the couch together after a long day. About this very kitchen when he's cooking, putting things together like a type of mad scientist. About Christopher’s grin when they play video games together, his face illuminated by the muted blue of a TV screen.
And, inevitably, he thinks about Eddie."
Or, Buck picks up a new hobby and it leads to some changes in his life he could have never expected.
