For a while, it doesn’t seem like Lucy’s going to say it back. There’s some bickering, and then there’s silence, and then when the fire roars so loud that almost nothing else can be heard, she finally speaks.
“I love you,” Lucy cries out. “I’m sorry. I do love you.”
“I know,” Tim responds, and it’s the last words either of them ever says.

In hindsight, Lucy isn’t entirely sure how it begins.
All she knows is that it’s Friday night and she’s sitting at a table with Tim, a bottle of whiskey between them, and a paper and pen on the table.
“Hard limits?” Tim asks, and Lucy bites her lip as she thinks. She’s tempted to say ‘none’, but she had been blissfully unaware of all the possible sexual acts that could come out in a Dominate and Submissive relationship until Tim had told her to do her research, and then meet him for dinner on Friday to talk about it in a tone that booked no argument and also turned her on so quickly that her vision blurred.
That had been two days ago, and she has barely slept since then, because every bit of research she does causes her brain to short circuit when she considers it in relation to Tim.

She has no idea, when she accepts the extra credit, that it’s going to change her entire fucking life.
“He can be… grumpy,” her English Lit teacher says, and Lucy winces where she’s standing in the doorway, her books clasped to her chest and her heavy backpack weighing her down.
“So he’s an asshole?”
Luna smiles at her and chuckles softly as she shakes her head.
“No, he’s a good boy deep down. He’s … like a burnt marshmallow, really. All crispy and rough on the outside, but inside he’s just gooey and sweet.”
