Summary
Steve had never had a best friend before. Other than Tommy, but that relationship was one built on status and a little fear, each only using the other for mutual benefits such as status and a possible smoke every once in a while. But having a best friend, heck- even a friend, had never seemed like a real tangible thing to Steve before until Robin had come along. Now he had someone he could sing along to Wham! songs on the radio with as they danced around the frequently vacant Family Video. Now he had somebody to ride shotgun in his car as they sped down the interstate highway, screaming till their lungs wore out. Somebody he could smoke a joint with as they lounged on pool floats in his backyard. Now he had someone he could share things with, someone he could talk to when the shadows of dusk crept along his soul and told him that he wasn’t worth it and that he was a failure, a washed up nobody with absent parents and had clearly peaked in high school.
He wished she could talk to him, though.

Taissa’s voice sounds so much like the girls who used to poke fun at her for not understanding the readings they were given in English class that her response comes out flat and pointed as she avoids looking at the other girl.
“I’m optimistic.”
“Why?”
Bullet question, fired right at her skull.
“Because,” she mutters, looking down at herself, feeling her eyes go big with annoyance. Something crashes into her, deflating the plume of anger that had been smoking up the cavern of her chest and she spits out a different end to her sentence than she’d originally planned. “Me.”

Instead, she parks her car in Lottie’s spot so it won’t get towed and then she meets Lottie by the curb out front. Puts her suitcase in the trunk and slides into the passenger seat.
Lottie looks like Stevie fuckin’ Nicks in a large black sun hat and matching shades. She has the window rolled down and leans her left hand out of it like she’s in a music video, right hand navigating the steering wheel a lot more loosely than Tai would like.
Tai grips her bag tightly in her lap. “This place better have wifi.”
