Summary
Eddie had always known about soulmates. Since he was a kid, he would always hear his parents tell him that someday, he would meet a girl and would hear her heartbeat. If he was being honest, he never believed it, until one summer.
He was at the lake one afternoon, hanging out with his friends, when the most beautiful girl he’d ever met came up to him. He turned around, and he heard it. Meeting his soulmate had always felt like such an impossible thing. There were billions of people on earth, how was he supposed to randomly meet the one?

Eddie meets his soulmate as a teenager, he quickly realizes he got it all wrong from the start.

"You cannot murder anyone," says Maddie. "Also, if you were going to murder your captain, it would be very stupid to write murder down as your top idea for how to deal with him."
"It's on a dry erase board!" Chim protests. So far, all he's written on the board is Ways to Deal with Capt Gerrasshole, and then 1. Murder? below it. "And I put a question mark. So even if I didn't erase it, the jury would never convict. A question mark introduces reasonable doubt."
Maddie rolls her eyes with a fond smile. "I assume there would be other evidence."
"I would never be so sloppy."
"Again, this would be more convincing if you hadn't immediately written murder right at the top of your list."

"Did I tell you about Diaz?"
Buck takes a sip of wine to hide his smile. If anyone had bet on which Buckley sibling would become a librarian and which would become a firefighter, Buck is pretty sure they would have lost their money. But he's happy where he is, and there's something he loves about Maddie as a firefighter. She talks like the guys he lived with after Peru, coworkers referred to by nothing but last names and embarrassing nicknames, and it's kind of perfect, honestly. He hasn't talked to his mom since Maddie enrolled in the academy, but he assumes steam comes out of her ears whenever she thinks about it.
"He's the other probie, right?" Buck asks. Diaz and Maddie went through training together, so the name is more familiar than the others. She was glad to get assigned to the same station as him.
"Yeah. I think he could use someone like Carla, he's having some trouble."

Buck is a librarian, Maddie is a firefighter, and Eddie is grateful that Buck has an afterschool program that Christopher is excited about.
