    Summary

“You look so good in white,” Michaela murmured. Francesca melted back into her at her words.

“We aren't supposed to be doing this anymore,” Francesca reminded her quietly. “I’m with John now."

“You’ve been with me a lot longer,” Michaela said into her skin.

“That isn’t how that works.” Francesca sputtered with an incredulous laugh. She really shouldn’t be surprised at her audacity anymore.

“OK, then you like me a lot more,” Michaela tried instead.

    Francesca sighed. “Michaela.”

    Summary

Francesca Bridgerton is a concert pianist who has not played in eight months. Not since her daughter was born still, and the silence moved in where the music used to be.

Michaela Stirling is a painter whose work hangs in the Tate Modern and whose life has been falling apart in public since her fiancée died of a brain aneurysm two years ago. She is brilliant, reckless, and has earned every inch of her reputation as the art world’s favourite disaster.

They meet at a gallery opening and something happens that neither of them can name.

    Summary

Francesca has a hunch, silence is not an option when Michaela Stirling is around. "Have you seen Miss Stirling tonight? Has she gone to bed already?"

"Did Miss Stirling not inform you?" The maid wondered.

    "Of what?" She mumbles.

"She has packed her belongings and left." For a moment, the world stills. The candlelight, the soft rustle of the maid’s apron—everything suspends. Francesca cannot move. She cannot think. She can only feel the now familiar, suffocating sense of loss settle over her again. Michael too, must think something is broken in her.

On the far edge of the ton, Michaela sits rigidly in her carriage, watching the night sky blur past the window. She wonders whether John is there watching over her. Grieving is certainly draining, but Michaela cannot help but be consumed by guilt. Guilt for leaving Francesca alone despite her promise to stay in Mayfair. But deeper still, guilt for the quiet flutter she felt when Francesca’s hand touched hers in the parlor. If fleeing to the farthest corner of the earth is what it takes to silence her own wicked mind, then she will flee. Even if it means breaking her promise.

    Summary

When Francesca Bridgerton returns to Kilmartin House in the wake of her husband's sudden death, she finds the one complication she cannot manage: Michaela Stirling, John's cousin, still in residence, and still capable of unsettling Francesca with a single look.
Michaela was the first person to offer Francesca comfort in London, and the first to abandon her without explanation. Now, forced into uneasy proximity by estate politics and watchful eyes, the two women circle each other through icy silences, sharp arguments, and moments of tenderness neither is willing to name. Francesca insists she is only trying to restore order. Michaela insists she is only trying to keep Francesca safe. But beneath the rules of mourning and the ruthless scrutiny of society, something forbidden begins to breathe.
Francesca is forced to confront an unbearable truth: she may be losing herself to a love she never knew she was allowed to want. Michaela, torn between devotion and fear, must decide whether protecting Francesca means leaving her... or choosing her.
The Widow's Reckoning is a passionate continuation of Francesca's story, where love does not replace what was lost, but dares to exist beside it... even if it becomes scandal.

    Summary

    “I do not know you.”

“Yet I should like to know you.”

Francesca finds that her eyes have already drifted back to her left, back towards Michaela.

“I—” She feels her cheeks paint pink, “Well you should—” She coughs. “Not.”

Michaela just smiles, nonplussed, “I fear your repellant disposition is having the opposite effect, Miss Bridgerton.”

Francesca cheeks redden even further as she rolls her eyes, looking away again, “I told you to—”

“Tell me then, Francesca..” Michaela purrs, turning towards Francesca and stepping closer. Francesca’s neck jerks right back to her at the sound of her voice. Her heels click once, twice. And she teases a small pout, a dangerous gesture indeed, “What mountains must I move to earn favor with you?”

Francesca’s eyes unconsciously fall to Michaela’s lips for a half-second.

And when she looks back up, Michaela's pout transforms into that same damned enigmatic smile.

Holding her gaze steady, seemingly unaffected, Francesca finally suggests,

“Perhaps you can start with Everest.”

Or, Queen Charlotte decides to spice up this year’s season by adding a jewel to her collection of diamonds.
