    Yoshiki makes a noncommittal noise. Hikaru huffs. She always gets pissy when they talk about stuff like this. She elbows the other girl, who shoots her a glare.

    “C’mon, it’ll be helpful to ya too, for when ya get a boyfriend.”

    “Like I could get a boyfriend.”

    And that- well, it doesn’t make sense. Yoshiki’s gorgeous, there’s no better word for it. Even with the moles she’s always complaining about. Personally, Hikaru thinks they add to her looks. Like those Western actresses with their beauty marks. Yoshiki’s got a hot body too, though Hikaru’s never told her. She knows that’s something friends don’t say to each other. It might be a little weird to think about, but Yoshiki’s just lucky. She’s got the bra size of Hikaru’s dreams.

    or; OG Hikaru and Yoshiki are girls, and some things change but most things don't. The story still ends the same.

    Hikaru’s mind flashes with memories of her. Yoshiki, back when they were young. They held their skirts above the creek water, reddened knees on display. Yoshiki, red-faced, bangs sliding over her face like a curtain. Yoshiki’s pinky intertwined with hers. A promise under the blanket of night with the moon as their witness. Friends forever.

    “How?” Yoshiki stares out over the slopes of scrap. “How d’ya… fix it?”

    Hikaru pauses in his motion, lets the stick pitch over. He reaches into his pocket and slips something out, something small that bounces back at the beams of the sun.

    He flicks at the cap of the lighter.

    “Fire. Pulls the skin back together, or somethin’.” Hikaru turns to him and grins, wide and toothy. “Ain’t that cool?”

    Yoshiki learns about Hikaru's new form.

    “Hikaru would never say that.” He digs himself unforgivably deeper. “Thought ya were s’posed to be just like him.”

    Hikaru shudders. It’s a mechanical sort of vibration. It doesn’t roll over his whole body, just his torso, his head.

    “I am.” His eyelids shutter, like pages flipping in a book. “Doesn’t mean my feelings ain’t real.”

    His eyes find Yoshiki’s, pupils flashing red. They aren’t round— they’re sharp, pixelated.

    “Right, Yoshiki?”

    Yoshiki can’t answer. He doesn’t know.

    “I wanted you to stay,” says Hikaru.

    Yoshiki’s hands feel numb from how hard he’s squeezing them. He keeps his nails trimmed short and neat, but they still score deep into his palms and make his skin hurt.

    “M’here now,” says Yoshiki, his accent slipping a bit in his anger and fear.

    “No,” says Hikaru, sneering, “yer not.”

    Or: Yoshiki returns to visit Kubitachi for Hikaru's wedding.
