Summary
The vampires—vicious, brutish monsters—grew resentful toward the very humans they should've protected. That resentment ignited years of bloodshed, until at last only one vampire remained. A truce was eventually forged, restoring peace to the land of Sumeru.
The arrangement was simple: hostilities between humans and the vampire would cease if once a year the Akademiya—the institution responsible for both governance and education—sent a person as an offering, along with sufficient wealth to keep the vampire at bay. In return, the vampire would retreat from the world of the living, emerging only when called upon to fulfill its duty.
How this convention first came to be? That was a story for another time.

When the time came to fulfill their part of the arrangement, who could the Akademiya possibly have sent as an offering to Alhaitham, the last living vampire? Perhaps... a blonde architect, down on his luck?
