In a what if scenario if, by some chance, Yuffie didn't end up saving everyone at Costa Del Sol. Cloud is the only one to be whisked away to once again be under Hojo's "care". Whatever that entails. While Avalanche panics about how to locate and rescue Cloud, he must endure and find solace in an unlikely ally. A version of Sephiroth not aligned with Jenova.
In other words, Advent Children Sephiroth finding an unexpected change to the timeline due to his attempts to make changes to it as he seeks to have Cloud join his side. This diversion comes as both a blessing and a curse. Now it is up to Sephiroth to fix and make up for this drastic change that tests Cloud's resilience and Sephiroth's patience.

It's an especially clear night, and the river of stars stretching above them is bright and sparkling. The next settlement is still quite a distance away, so there's nothing to disrupt the view of the night sky—no artificial light besides Fenrir’s to distract from the lights above.
Finally, Sephiroth seems to have had his fill of the stars—for now—and leans against Cloud again with a sigh. His hands rest underneath Cloud’s jacket, fingers spread over his ribs above the tank top. His nose nudges the back of Cloud’s neck as he breathes in deeply and then all but nuzzles his face into Cloud’s hair.
On the handlebars, Cloud’s fingers briefly clench as he feels his cheeks start to blush.

Summary
Sephiroth travels back in time early enough to see Shinra gun down Zack and intercepts Cloud before he meets AVALANCHE. His last defeat taught him that it was not the planet that he wanted... it was Cloud and it would always be Cloud. He plans to not make the same mistakes he did with his last time travel. Who needs a mother's love if they could have Cloud Strife's love instead?
This time, he just needs to make himself too tempting for Cloud to ignore or forget.
