Summary
Near has Mello under siege, dragging him into a battle of wits, strategy, and stealth, one that has him in a state of constant vigilance, ever-ready for an attack. With his dignity and his ego on the line, Mello throws himself head-first into psychological warfare against his longtime rival, trying any tactic he can to help him turn the tide in his favor. The game is as complex and mind-bending as four-dimensional chess, and Mello has to think twenty moves ahead just to keep up, but he’ll be damned before losing to Near at this.
—
In which Near accidentally gaslights Mello into being his boyfriend, and Mello does Olympic-level mental gymnastics in order to read Near’s actions as sinister.

Summary
For the fifth day in a row, Mello gets back to his dorm just before midnight. His mind and body are an ugly smear of artificial energy and authentic exhaustion, the caffeine he’s consumed still coursing through his bloodstream even as his limbs threaten to give out. He hasn’t slept well in at least two weeks, but the semester is almost done— his last set of final exams is tomorrow.
So is his birthday, actually, but that matters less.

Summary
Mello knows he shouldn’t do it.
He knows he shouldn’t— and ordinarily, he wouldn’t even think of doing it because it’s weird and gross, and he’s classy and refined, so it’s not his style— but the situation is dire. There aren’t many options available to him; you have to understand that.
It’s late, for one. It’s late, and they’re in the middle of nowhere because L is pissed off at them for something Near definitely did but refuses to confess to— something dumb, like replacing the sugarcubes in the breakroom with meticulously-crafted cubes of salt, except not that specifically because he did own up to it that time— and he’s sent them on this asinine assignment as penance. They’re here in fucking Iowa doing some small-town serial killer bullshit that L would never bother with, and Mello’s toothbrush is compromised and there is nowhere for him to buy a replacement. Even Wal-Mart is closed.
And, well, Near’s toothbrush is right there.

Summary
Near’s laptop sits open on the desk before him, a PDF of his multivariate calculus textbook taking up the majority of the screen. Five minutes ago he was still pretending to make an actual effort to study, but now his eyes fix themselves unwaveringly on the little digital clock in the corner. One of the pixels there is dead.
It is 2:58 PM. Mello’s last class ends at 3:00. It usually takes him only ten or so minutes to make his way back to their shared room; the language building is relatively close to their dormitory.
Still, it’s too early for Near to begin their routine. He has to time things carefully.

Summary
When Mello finally gets her arms around Near, sweeping her up into a tight, warm hug, it feels like she’s been waiting years for the moment.
Of course, she hasn’t been waiting years, but it has been a while— technically only three days since they last saw each other, but eight since the last time they fucked, and probably twenty-some odd days since Mello got to really, truly hold her. For three weeks and some change, she’s had nothing of Near save for a few quickies here and there, brief trysts squeezed in-between Near’s endless hours in the library and at the lab. Mello is beyond glad that the semester is finally fucking over.
“You made it,” she sighs into Near’s neck.
Near just makes a soft sound and presses closer.

Summary
“What’s it like to give a blowjob?” Naruto asks.
“Pretty easy,” Sasuke says. He doesn’t want Naruto to talk about blowjobs. He shifts a little on the bed. His face feels warm.
“That’s it? Easy?”
“What, you want details?”

Summary
“Not enjoying the party?” he asks, making Near jump in surprise.
He clears his throat and tries to look back at his textbook. “Um, not really. I don’t go to those.”
“Right,” the other boy chuckles. “Why would you when you have this depressing ass roof space to hang out on?”
-or-
Near and Mello fall in love with the help of a rooftop, a rusty lawn chair, and some sweet ass origami skills.

Bookmarker's Notes
Absolutely wonderful. The dynamic in this fic is so delicately written and so wonderfully tender it knocked me right off my fucking feet when I first read it. I'd been wanting to read something like this [i.e. a similar setup for both of their lives] for a long while, actually, and I couldn't have possibly asked for better execution 🫶
