Summary
The mood of the orphanage had always been hopeless. How could it be anything more than that, when none remained for long. An orphan would grow old enough to be considered an adult, only to be used by everyone and everything, for their bodies, their money, and everything they could ever have. And then, ultimately, they would vanish, never to be seen or heard from again. This was inevitability at its finest, a truth that all the orphans knew.
And yet, at some point, hope blossomed in this barren land. It did not come in a single instant, however. It rose up, built fragment by fragment, piece by piece, until the hopeless lost lambs found the hope to stand, and the spirit to fight back.
And it all began with a single girl.

Patty looks miserable. Usually she's up and about, flitting around his office like his very own pixie. An argumentative pixie with very loud opinions about how he handles his space. Right now, she's quiet and snotty and gross. That's not right, Dante thinks, feeling disturbed.
