Summary
Caine’s deletion wasn’t as straightforward as it first seemed. He “survives” by virtue of a backup file nobody planned for: A.B.L.E.
Left to run on a mere fraction of his former processing power, Caine has no choice but to rely on the humans’ magnanimity to reteach him how to run The Amazing Digital Circus “correctly” … whatever that might mean in their jaded, disillusioned eyes.
All the while, he struggles to cope with his past, his identity, and the fact that the humans definitely seem to prefer him now that everything he once thought made him “him” is gone in a way he will never be able to replace.

Summary
Caine wished he understood Pomni. Okay, he wished he understood all the humans but he especially wished he understood Pomni. Jax only wanted chaos, Ragatha wanted kindness, Gangle wanted stability, Kinger wanted safety, Zooble wanted understanding, but Pomni? Caine couldn’t even begin to draw a through-line in her edits.

Being recoded hurt like Hell. There’s a joke, somewhere, in Caine using “Hell” to describe things. He can’t think of it now. The pain (if it is pain, and not something else, because pain is a human thing and he is not human) rakes over him in stinging lines as he is altered.
“There,” Zooble mutters, “Let’s see if that works.”

Caine somehow dragged himself out of quarantine and back into the Circus with a tag-along. The humans are terrified – what are they suppose to do with two AI programs?
But Abel is nothing like Caine. Efficient, quiet, curious, and a surprisingly good listener. He apologizes when he misunderstands and promises to let them do as they please, stepping in only when requested or needed. He cannot tell them what happened to the Circus to turn it into this hell, but Abel tries to his best to soothe over the wounds that his predecessor left. It’s the safest everyone* has felt in a long, long time.
