Iruka cast a doubtful look at his paint-splattered bag. The bright blue, yellow, and pink splatter "suited" him?
Kakashi was definitely making fun of Iruka. And why wouldn't he? After Kakashi had made a mockery of the rank of chūnin by nominating his wet-behind-the-ears genin team for the chūnin exam and by pointing out that he'd been a chūnin by the age of 6, and after he'd casually torn into Iruka before their peers, it seemed very, painfully reasonable that Kakashi was making fun of him.
And that pissed Iruka off.
He felt so stupid for mooning over the Copy-Nin when he was younger. But asked himself bitterly, for the millionth time in years, how he could think that someone like the Copy-Nin could ever like or respect a forever-chūnin like himself.
It's not like there was something about the Copy-Nin that Iruka wasn't seeing... right?Series

Summary
Kakashi and Iruka are mates... sort of.
Well, they are, but Kakashi's initial rejection of the mating bond years before their adulthood has (understandably) caused some tension between them. That is to say, Iruka hates Kakashi just as much as the universe wants them to fall in love, but they've both learned to cope well enough to get by.
Even so, when Iruka is attacked in the field and goes into heat, all that changes. He and Kakashi are faced with a choice-- have sex, or let Iruka die from hestsickness.
And if they learn to fall together instead of apart, well, that'd just be fate for you.
