"Hey, 'Ruka, love?" Kakashi called slowly, his eyes fixed on the small object in his hands. So tiny, yet so immense.
"Mmhm?" Iruka called back[....]
"What's this?" Kakashi called, his attention still fixed on the little object. He couldn't tear his eyes away from it. Funny, how such a tiny thing could trigger his survival response, kicking him into a heightened state of hyperalertness in the briefest instant. [...] "Could you come look?" He couldn't move. He kept his feet planted on the floor, willing them to stay where they were instead of running, running, running.
[...]
"What've you– oh," Iruka said as he entered the bedroom, his voice dying. "You.... Where did you find that?"It is the hitai-ate that explains everything: the vest he wears, the job he has, the reasons for everything he does. It explains the blood and tears that are spilled, the aching of hearts, the shattered trust; and it shows just how easily everything that is precious can be lost.
How can one tiny thing carry so much power?

Summary
He was known only as The Butterfly, and he was beautiful.
You could not find The Butterfly at any particular brothel or house of ill repute; he had no home, no gang to which he belonged, and no boss but himself. There were some he frequented more than others; it was said that he would approach a brothel, offering them a percentage of his earnings in exchange for their nicest room for a stay of a duration of his choice. No one was stupid enough to refuse.
You could buy his body and his time. But what he gave freely, and that which made him more treasured than anything else, was his love.

Iruka cast a doubtful look at his paint-splattered bag. The bright blue, yellow, and pink splatter "suited" him?
Kakashi was definitely making fun of Iruka. And why wouldn't he? After Kakashi had made a mockery of the rank of chūnin by nominating his wet-behind-the-ears genin team for the chūnin exam and by pointing out that he'd been a chūnin by the age of 6, and after he'd casually torn into Iruka before their peers, it seemed very, painfully reasonable that Kakashi was making fun of him.
And that pissed Iruka off.
He felt so stupid for mooning over the Copy-Nin when he was younger. But asked himself bitterly, for the millionth time in years, how he could think that someone like the Copy-Nin could ever like or respect a forever-chūnin like himself.
It's not like there was something about the Copy-Nin that Iruka wasn't seeing... right?Series
