"Hey," Sonic's drowsy manner of speech manages to get the other out of his thoughts before the hedgehog asks the question that had silently plagued his night, "... How'd y' get hurt?"
Tails doesn't reply. He gives no response whatsoever, neither by his words nor by his expressions. It's as if he doesn't even acknowledge it, as though he didn't hear him.
"What happened?" Sonic tries again, his voice a bit higher, a bit clearer because he wants to know. He adds, gazing up at the other expectantly, "To us, I mean."
There's another pause and it makes Sonic think Tails didn't hear him again.

Sonic's communicator starts beeping furiously, blinking a bright red that makes his heart jump to his throat.
The teen drops all of his attempts to call Tails and immediately goes to assess what's wrong.

"Tails…?"
Sonic snaps his head up, seemingly no longer aware of the dizziness that made him feel sick or the exhaustion that weighed his body down. All of his previous worries are now replaced by concerns for his little brother.
Tails was there. He remembers seeing the fox. The last thing he remembers is seeing the fox.
It's coming back to him now, in an episodic way he remembers what got him here. Eggman attacked. Shadow was there. So was Zavok. And Metal and Chaos.
There was a masked jackal.

He has a tracker installed in all of them, he knows where all of them are at all times so finding Sonic shouldn't be that hard if he's got his communicator with him, which Tails trusts he does.
He clicks on the little blue dot and the application maps his big brother's location within seconds.
Tails' eyes widen as he reads the exact coordinates, the exact location.
His brows knit, he grits his teeth.

Summary
He brings the wrench up and clutches it with both hands, taking up a stance as he anticipates another guiding sound. His ears are standing upright to make sure he doesn't miss anything.
A minute passes.
Then two.
Nothing happens.
Tails releases the breath he didn't know he was holding. Momentarily, he lets himself relax a bit, his ears pinning against his head as his posture becomes lax.

Even if nobody else sees it just yet, he does and it makes his stomach churn — a hungry void gnaws at his guts and it makes him shudder when he thinks of all the evidence. Of the scene of the crime. One that disappeared before anyone else had the chance to see it.
But Tails did. Tails saw it. Even if he can't prove it just yet, he will prove it soon. He has to. Otherwise, it's going to strike again. Claim another life before disappearing in the shadows.

Realization dawns upon Tails as he soaks in her words — interpreting them again and again, defining 'predator' over and over in his head until he's certain there is no other meaning, nothing else the woman had been implying this whole time. She thinks… She thinks he's a danger to Sonic. She thinks he's going to hurt him. She thinks he's with Sonic because he wants to hurt him.

There's a pause in the conversation and it forces Sonic to face the kit again who appears to be still looking at him incredulously, as if he just can't wrap his head around the other. As if Sonic is some puzzle he can't solve.
"I'm not him." He says at last.
"Of course you're not," Sonic smiles at him, "But you're still Tails... That's what matters."
