Summary
Colin wanted people to like him. He did not think there was anything wrong with that. He had become the connection between members of his family. He brokered peace when there were quarrels. He saw needs people felt couldn’t be said, and offered succor for things that no one would ask. And when Penelope had needed a friend in every ballroom - long before Eloise deigned to join the fray - he had made himself at least that companion.
“Come with me,” Benedict said brusquely, his grip around Colin’s neck tugging him into a half embrace. A kiss landed on his forehead, and his brother walked him the long way around to the garden entrance. The doors were propped open, though the breeze was not as warm as full summer. The patio was sparsely populated. People were not eager to be in nature with any hint of damp or cool.
“There we are,” his brother said softly. “I cannot imagine you wish to stay longer, but we must give them time to depart before we are also waiting for a carriage. Would you like to sit?”

The duties of a baron start young, and Baby Lord Featherington is excelling at running dinner in preparation for managing the estate.

“What if I were to tell you I will be cross to see you go in the balloon?”
“I will help her divorce you,” Eloise said blithely.
His huff of offended dread was like a death rattle. Penelope opened her mouth to argue they would not divorce over a summer entertainment. She was not so set on this silly moment she would threaten their family.
“This is ridiculous and has gone too far,” Penelope said sharply. “I will ride with Eloise, and you can ride with Benedict later. Then we will be exactly even, the children will not be orphaned if the balloon suddenly collapses into an inferno that tosses us broken to the ground, and all will be even.”
Very broadly inspired by Rottentiger's fanart: https://www.tumblr.com/rottentiger-art/803587711089983488/its-their-day-its-their-day-that-family-only?source=share. Not at all the same kind of balloon, but the fear is real.

Summary
Colin’s collection of rings added to his nerves. He had pictured the pearl ring at first, but Pen had put it away like it displeased her. It was small and he understood not every woman liked every gem equally. He had found a sapphire that felt acceptable, but he would not be offended if she wanted to choose something different. The family jeweler had argued an engagement ring should have a durable stone, and not every lady would continue to wear it after the wedding.
He sighed, and the knock on his door was a relief. He stood up and called for the visitor to come in. Benedict poked his head in, smiling.
“Good morning, Brother. It is the big day,” he said. “I wanted to deliver my wedding present and keep my place as the first to do so. I am so rarely informed before all others. The placid life of an artist does not allow for the winning of every race.”

Summary
Portia was drinking and he expected that, somewhere in the house, Mrs. Varley also was.
“I have put a chair next to Penelope’s bed,” the worried mother told him. “She is uneasy. She speaks of going out at night and trying to get a new printer who we know not at all! Of skipping her helpers entirely! Of negotiating a higher price, even!”
Well, that was unacceptable! She could not traipse around the city like that, advertising her urgency and willingness to trust when it was not earned both ways. Colin’s heart would not allow it. “So I am permitted to sit bedside and guard her like a warden?”
Portia shrugged sharply. “I do not know what to do, Mr. Bridgerton! I do not know what to do! She is so distraught after being so happy her little paper boys were left alone. She was happy to know her printers were treated to lunch and questioned vaguely. But they were not returned home. They were returned to their shops on a burning street. A message one would think. Was it directly from the Queen? Perhaps not. There are those who are very loyal to their Queen.”

Summary
Queen Charlotte might one day want to award Mr. Percy Iqor a title of some sort, like Esquire or Queen’s Counsel, and she would find he was registered but deceptively hard to find. His surname was hard to understand, fictional as it was and indistinctly foreign. His real law degree did not resemble his work in the publishing milieu. And even more difficult would be to find how he might be a male relation of Lady Whistledown without being part of the ton. He was not an ambitious man. He was happier to be making commissions than he was to be contacted by high-profile clientele.
“Your paper boys will not need me,” Penelope’s solicitor said certainly. “Their small ages are a blessing in that way. They are grown men as much as it goes to do a day of work, but they are also good at standing up to a threat of a drubbing.”

Summary
Colin was not concentrating on much outside of his own musings about Penelope when he sat at loose ends before a family meeting the next day. He wanted to do better, but he trusted Anthony’s need to have him settled and safe. He couldn’t entirely leave behind Pen across the street. He had gone home to make sure the dog was let out one last time before bed, though a bedtime was a misnomer.

Summary
She was darling, just like her mother, and also insidious like a snake when she saw a plaything she might want.
His lovely little bunny kidnapping daughter had used her rapport with their biggest male rabbit to relieve him of his cuddliest little bunny. Colin had seen this little bun carried around like a much smaller baby, like she was her father’s clingy buddy. He suspected there were bunny ears and strong legs under the thorough swaddling.
“Did you pick up a little rabbit and keep it?”
“No, that’s my dolly. Her name is Rabbitha!”

Summary
Pen smiled and posed. She moved the skirt and swirled it almost all the way around. That was a skill rather than a natural ability, she’d discovered. It took a lot of confidence to just throw herself into the physicality of the long skirt. Her shoes weren’t perfect, but they didn’t hurt a lot. She wasn’t cold.
Colin treated her like she was royalty. He held her arm up and down stairs. He asked if she wanted a glass of wine. He had opera glasses, which were not adding to her view of things because their box was pretty close to the stage. They giggled over the realization they were both imagining a whole new plot for Tosca that might have been unfairly informed by Bugs Bunny cartoon satires of another opera entirely.
The chandelier didn’t even quiver and threaten to fall on the audience. She cried during the solos, and didn’t know why. Colin’s whole view of the stage was with her French twist and little jeweled hair combs leaning into the kisses he pressed to her head while he crammed them so close on the seats she should have just sat in his lap. He took off one of her gloves and slipped her bare fingers inside the unbuttoned shirt he’d decided was fashion forward.

Summary
Forever seemed to smooth under the skin of her thighs under her jean shorts, and he had been opening her door when she hopped at him and put her little arms around his neck. It was an accident to lift her and press her against the car. It wasn’t an accident to dig himself between her legs and grind his erection on her. It wasn’t unthinking to curse and paw at her hips and flick her one button open to the tune of her smallest, cutest moan.
He was overlooking a lot of things that deserved to be considered. There was a very tiny diamond ring on her hand. There were a lot of connections that made their lives a nightmare if they made a few wrong choices like this. They were fortunate to pull out of the teenage love they’d tried as cleanly as they did. And sometimes he was braver than his best day and her Conrad came out with an immense grip on the situation.
Spoilers up to 3 X05, and trigger warning for cheating.

Summary
Penelope was trying to cope with Colin’s offer to go with her on the book tour, as if it would be some kind of massive expedition to bring her words to the world. It would look like a honeymoon, and somehow more validating for a romance than if they did have a wedding. It was too sweet that he would even offer and that he meant it by way of helping her manage the travel and interviews. She had been paid a little for her book ahead of time, but it wasn’t enough for a salary for an assistant.
Her image of a book tour was eight bookstores in London and maybe one in a Dublin weekend stop. She had Francesca’s offer to stay in a real Scottish castle, which would be a coup to interview in that setting. But it was a first novel by an unknown author. She couldn’t get carried away. He’d started mentioning literary awards like she needed to know about the dates when they announced nominees. He started talking about updating her representation for a full social media presence and a way to share a bit more with her fans in a way that didn’t get them breaking into her flat.

Summary
Spoilers Up to 2x6.
Wedding days lasted forever for the bride, which really added a horror to it when she found herself always in between somewhere she should be waiting and another place she was due to be. Lizzy felt more normal in her robe and sweet stays. Until she was wearing white, she could blend in with the ladies of her bridal party. She was just another guest. She wasn’t marked for greatness or tragedy.
In white, sweeping down staircases or along hallways, she was too haunting. She was too veiled and dramatic. She was constantly on the way to somewhere - not hurrying but also not at her leisure. She was more of a symbol than a person. The bride, like the title of a play that was about a monster who ate children and skinned neighbourhood pets.

Summary
“My Love, is this one column so vital to your publishing career,” Colin asked. “This feels like the goading kick a little goat might make to a great bull. I know Queen Charlotte has come after you first, but she likes to win.”
Pen pulled at his hand holding the cake until she could take a bite, “I have announced there is a Lord Whistledown,” she said. “And that love is worth both chasing and sacrificing to keep it.”
He couldn’t be upset about that sentiment, and let her push the cake up to his lips. “That is a fine theme,” Colin agreed. “And I am flattered. But you will finish your broth before more cake, for the sake of the blood you have lost in your toil today.”
Penelope sat up and took the cup, looking into the thin soup. “Mama is being dramatic,” she said.

Summary
They chatted on the ride, and he kept it light. It was exciting to be going somewhere with her. The restaurant wasn’t new or trendy, but it was a bit known for being different from British cuisine and a show with dinner. He helped her off with her jacket and they sat together with Colin’s arm across the back of her chair.
The chefs were unusually full of bad jokes, or they were intent on doing the fire stunts. Colin caught the hot shrimp thrown her way, and he was shocked when Pen leaned in and ate it from his palm. He acted jealous about the chef winking at her, and fed her from his plate. And he didn’t know if it was his best meal, but he laughed the entire time because Pen was glittering with enjoyment. The hot grill didn’t bother him. The oil and smoke in the air was just part of it. Any blots on his face or his shirt would wash out.
Pen was invited to make the onion volcano, and she did a great job, squealing as the flames shot up. Colin grilled some beef and chicken, and they had four other people at the table with them. They were clearly the date night table, but no one seemed to be strangers.

Summary
Red hair was full of magic, evil diluted by human devotion to prayer, and passion that was hard to conduct into needlepoint and reading a book of the Bible every day. Quiet was not a sign of no trouble, but the held-breath of a world that knew Lady Whistledown had been out and about.
Being passed into the carriage by a stern and nonplussed Lord Debling was another message entirely. Miss had cried, and she was wrapped into a big coat that had to be the man’s. She was streaked with coal and smelled oily. Her hands were scraped to the point they were puffy and looked infected already. She lifted them out of the long sleeves. She had been gone all of ten minutes, and Rae had been terrified when the coach left her at the printer’s. What had been a very infantilizing set of instructions before the danger was the only thing that had prevented a silly rescue that would not work. One maid might fetch home another, but a lady was only extricated from ruin by a man - unless that man decided to ruin her in his own way.
“Were you caught, Miss?”
