“Foot gone,” Elliot said, tapping at it rather indelicately. “Mama fix? No frow ‘way. Fix. Help. Birdy baba.”
To Elliot, Mama was a mama to everyone in the house except Papa, who fell into a special category. So anyone should see her for a correction to the circumstances of being hungry, tired or hurt.
“Is he my baba like you’re my ginger baba,” she asked. “Birdy baba?”
“Baba sad. Fix. Boo-boo, fix.”
Colin’s soul shone in their boy, and he returned to his playing to let her work out what she could do for the little toy. It was so small, and her sewing was reprehensibly poor. But she was just giving it back to Felicity for more abuse, so perhaps it was best not to put heart and soul into perfection.

Summary
He had not believed the chronograph would actually allow him to go back again, and he had not considered that his arrival would not move him but deliver him to the same place where he had been only three years earlier - more or less. Colin did not know the date. He was not sure of his standing in the house. If he was a suitor for Miss Thompson, he would be accepted easily. If he was a disgraced former fiance, he would be kicked out.
There was only a window of thirty minutes to visit back and be commended home with what memories he had refreshed. His family was across the street, but he wanted to see Pen. His younger self had never missed that, even if he had tried to mind his manners about it better than the man who had won her hand.
Colin walked upstairs with his ears alert for his mother-in-law’s footsteps. He would have known where to find a calendar in his own house, but he was not sure the Featherington office would be quite as particular. Lord Featherington might be dead or merely absent on his amusements out of the house. He did not work at the books with any faithfulness. Bad news was likely hard to confront, and the estate was faltering.

“Good boy king!” Elliot took off the crown and turned it to show off the velvet padding and trim of black and white that mimicked fur.
“Lovely,” Penelope said, stroking his happy little face.
It was not the best thing to give little lords the accoutrements of unquestioned power. However, it did go well with the golden smoking jacket he was wearing, the knotted belt done up too well not to have had an adult hand in it.
“Did Granny also give you a new robe?”
Elliot nodded. “Gammy Vee!”

Eloise had the best time playing bookstore lesbian besties. Benedict had matched her with every word, even escalating to the point he whispered the obscenities and goaded her to reply in kind. It had ended up with both of them inside his big cardigan, buttoned up to the top and lumbering around like a two-headed smut monster vaguely humping their way through the stacks. He told her about dirty books she hadn’t discovered, and it was a lot of fun.

The damp would start flowers growing, and he had envisioned the gazebo with bright blooms. It was, in hindsight, a gap in his education about gardening to expect summer flowers months early to make him look good for his wife. Sitting out weather was months away.
“Big stick house,” his son observed, not incorrectly.
“Papa built a bad house for Mama, and it’s too cold to have her sit out in it,” he said. “But it’s fairly steady. I didn’t believe I’d get any help from a book about carpentry, but some guardian angel was on my side. Or I suppose they are on Mama’s side, since that’s her old neighbourhood.”
He chuckled at his own joke, and the baby patted him. “Good job, Papa! Nice sticks.”
“You’re a good boy, and you’re very kind.”

Summary
