Summary
Colin wanted people to like him. He did not think there was anything wrong with that. He had become the connection between members of his family. He brokered peace when there were quarrels. He saw needs people felt couldn’t be said, and offered succor for things that no one would ask. And when Penelope had needed a friend in every ballroom - long before Eloise deigned to join the fray - he had made himself at least that companion.
“Come with me,” Benedict said brusquely, his grip around Colin’s neck tugging him into a half embrace. A kiss landed on his forehead, and his brother walked him the long way around to the garden entrance. The doors were propped open, though the breeze was not as warm as full summer. The patio was sparsely populated. People were not eager to be in nature with any hint of damp or cool.
“There we are,” his brother said softly. “I cannot imagine you wish to stay longer, but we must give them time to depart before we are also waiting for a carriage. Would you like to sit?”

“I will help her divorce you,” Eloise said blithely.
His huff of offended dread was like a death rattle. Penelope opened her mouth to argue they would not divorce over a summer entertainment. She was not so set on this silly moment she would threaten their family.
“This is ridiculous and has gone too far,” Penelope said sharply. “I will ride with Eloise, and you can ride with Benedict later. Then we will be exactly even, the children will not be orphaned if the balloon suddenly collapses into an inferno that tosses us broken to the ground, and all will be even.”

Summary
Colin’s collection of rings added to his nerves. He had pictured the pearl ring at first, but Pen had put it away like it displeased her. It was small and he understood not every woman liked every gem equally. He had found a sapphire that felt acceptable, but he would not be offended if she wanted to choose something different. The family jeweler had argued an engagement ring should have a durable stone, and not every lady would continue to wear it after the wedding.
He sighed, and the knock on his door was a relief. He stood up and called for the visitor to come in. Benedict poked his head in, smiling.
“Good morning, Brother. It is the big day,” he said. “I wanted to deliver my wedding present and keep my place as the first to do so. I am so rarely informed before all others. The placid life of an artist does not allow for the winning of every race.”

Summary
Portia was drinking and he expected that, somewhere in the house, Mrs. Varley also was.
“I have put a chair next to Penelope’s bed,” the worried mother told him. “She is uneasy. She speaks of going out at night and trying to get a new printer who we know not at all! Of skipping her helpers entirely! Of negotiating a higher price, even!”
Well, that was unacceptable! She could not traipse around the city like that, advertising her urgency and willingness to trust when it was not earned both ways. Colin’s heart would not allow it. “So I am permitted to sit bedside and guard her like a warden?”
Portia shrugged sharply. “I do not know what to do, Mr. Bridgerton! I do not know what to do! She is so distraught after being so happy her little paper boys were left alone. She was happy to know her printers were treated to lunch and questioned vaguely. But they were not returned home. They were returned to their shops on a burning street. A message one would think. Was it directly from the Queen? Perhaps not. There are those who are very loyal to their Queen.”

Summary
A slow-burn canon twist starting from the first time Colin notices Debling noticing Penelope, setting off a lot of feelings he realizes were always trying to dig their way out of his denial. Pen is courting with the eye to marry well and keep her career, Colin is in love so big it is only dwarfed by the accompanying trouble, and Debling is not the only rival suitor. Lots of inclusion of Featherington and Bridgerton family members as the spectacle becomes a debacle with the goal of a wedding. WIP, not always that serious, and sometimes smutty/angsty.

Colin was pacing the front hall. He had never been so jittery in his life. All his anxiety, anticipation, and excitement compelled his feet back and forth across the hall.
Ever since Mama had told him that Penelope would be joining them for the holiday via the girls’ carriage, he had been even more fidgety than usual. He had not been able to be normal around her since he had been home from Eton, and that was six months ago. When Eloise had called after her in the park and she had turned, her hair swirling around her, her face pink and her mouth laughing, a feeling Colin could only describe as blazing hot calm had washed over him. She was so perfectly beautiful, so perfectly kind and charming, so perfectly clever and sparkling.
Perfect.
It wasn’t fair.
