“Coast is clear, everything’s fine. Just a bit dusty and dark, but it’s an easy fix.” Vi says, glancing backwards at Caitlyn.
Cait hums, steps in and takes the inside of the dilapidated shrine in. “Very… dank,” She comments idly, walking up to the altar and running a finger along the table. She lifts her finger up, inspects it carefully, then blows the dust off of it carelessly. She looks over her shoulder towards Vi, “I suppose you don’t have anything to light matches with?”
“Do you?” Vi responds in lieu of an answer, stepping closer to Caitlyn. Caitlyn, in turn, smirks– she unlatches her satchel, digs around, and pulls out a match. Vi watches her curiously, intently, as she reaches down and proceeds to strike the match on her pants. It lights effortlessly, a faint flame quivering inside the still shrine. Caitlyn barely spares her a glance as she sets about lighting the candles, long forgotten and full of small dust bunnies.
Well. Wasn’t that attractive.

Summary
She let Ambessa’s honeyed words scratch her scalp and bathe her bones. She let her teach her, let her train her, let her mold her. Knuckles nicked and scabbed and shorn, fibrous tissue straining and tearing until it was stitched back together firmer. Stronger. Body every day left bruised, bloodied, and raw before eventually forming into calluses coddling her skin– and scar tissue encasing her heart.
Every second was spent melting the alloys, scraping away the imperfections, quelching the scalding heat over and over until it became impervious steel. She honed herself into a weapon with one sole purpose.
The woman she left, pleading and stricken, standing in the middle of the street, calling her name, calling after her, tone begging her to halt her strides, to turn around, to look just once more.
Caitlyn didn’t. She couldn’t.
All of it. All of it was for this.
But as she gazes into glowing purple irises, the finger she poises on the trigger shakes.

“It still doesn’t feel real,” Caitlyn said as they walked. “That the worst is over, that we’re standing on the other side.”
A flock of starlings swept free of the cliffs, and they paused to watch them go. Caitlyn adjusted the shawl again, the same wind that kicked the surface of the water into peaks blowing the hair back from her face. Vi’s breath lodged against her ribs, like a hand over her heart.
“Maybe there is no other side,” Vi said. “Maybe it’s all one thing.”
