Summary
Joel has always tried to do the right thing. It’s just that he usually fails. He knows what the right thing to do is in this moment – send Ellie away, talk to her tomorrow, let her know he understands what she went through with David and that she’s safe.
But it’s hard to do the right thing when he is simply so relieved that she is alive.

Summary
Pierce’s initial assessment goes on for some time – long enough for Vasiliy to confirm, to his great dismay, that something is indeed awry with these Americans. He watches Pierce order the asset to perform menial tasks – to do 100 push-ups, to hold its breath until told otherwise, to disassemble and reassemble a variety of firearms, to do 200 pushups using only its flesh arm.
Pierce’s eyes are making him nervous, though. There is something distasteful about the way he looks at the asset, something too familiar and hungry. He is pleased with what he’s seen so far; Vasiliy finds himself wishing otherwise.

Hubble’s grateful. Real grateful. Grateful enough to feel that he’s gotta repay his debt to Reacher in one way or another, and they both are well aware that a dead man’s future promises are no good.
Reacher would normally say no for any variety of reasons: he can’t be troubled about it; he has more important things on his mind; he’s not interested in men. Instead, he says, “Whatever makes you feel better.” He does not say it for any particular reason outside of a desire to potentially eliminate this particular annoyance.

“Huh,” Jonny had said, just this quiet, considering noise, and Pat’s heart had stopped for a split second. “Thanks for telling me, Kaner. But be careful about picking up, ok?”
And with that piece of extremely practical advice, he’d clapped Patrick on the shoulder and walked away.
