“Zayne,” you started, “…is this truly what you think is the best option?” Your voice was so small compared to how it usually is, and it caused Zayne’s eyes to flicker from yours to the side again. Having enough of him evading you, you took hold of his cheek and turned his face towards you.
He still didn’t look you in the eyes, instead choosing to lower his gaze, sticking to your collarbone. With you above him, your already loose sweater was hanging off of you and exposing what hid under. Bandages covered your chest, right where his ice struck you. Phantom smell of blood filled his nostrils and he breathed in shakily, his resolve crumbling and surrendering to you once more.

From his vantage point, Thomas sees the slight hitch in Zayne’s breath, the way his fingers spasm as if current jolts through them. A bead of sweat traces down the side of his temple. Then, his whole body stiffens, as if seized by some unseen force.
The woman reaches for him. Concerned, always so concerned for him. But Zayne takes a single, unsteady step back.
Thomas can see it, the moment instinct fights against will. The second the power within him lashes out.
A blast of cold erupts from beneath Zayne’s feet, thin veins of ice snaking out across the pavement. The temperature in the air plunges, cold enough to be felt even inside the car. She gasps, her breath escaping in a cloud of mist as she stumbles back, eyes wide.
Thomas sucks in a sharp breath, heart pounding as he finally gets to witness it—the moment Zayne's power snaps. The ice roars to life, jagged and deadly, rushing toward the woman—
With a desperate, staggering step, Zayne throws himself into the path of his own attack. His hand shoots out, palm pressing against his side just as the ice pierces through him. The moment the jagged edges hit his body, a strained gasp rips from his lips.
