Not the job, not the team, not the stuttering, soft-hearted mess of a man who somehow became the most memorable part of it.
When fate (and one very persistent grandmother) puts them back in each other's orbit, Robert tells himself it's just catching up. Just being kind. Just casual. Herman tells himself he'll go along with whatever Robert wants to remain this close.
Bottom line: this is a story about a man who's never known love, and a man too afraid to let himself have it.
