Summary
How long have you been in love with her?
Is sitting in the air as they laugh, turning to each other like they’ve done something, and dropping the subject entirely in favor of grilling Grant on his upcoming wedding.
How long have you been in love with her?
Is sitting in the air as he blindly grabs for his beer, dragging it to his mouth and downing what’s left in the bottle in one desperate gulp.
How long have you been in love with her?
Is rewording itself, reworking itself, translating itself until it fits;
How long have you been in love with him?

Or, Eddie's in El Paso and suddenly everything makes sense.

Summary
Buck’s hair is gray at the temples, buzzed neatly on the sides and a bit longer and curlier on top than Chris remembers him wearing it, and there’s a new scar through one of his eyebrows. He looks good, like he’s living a happy life, and the only possible reason Chris can imagine for Buck to be here at Helena Diaz’s funeral in El Paso is that Chris’s father brought him.
“Why would you come?” Chris snaps at him.
Buck blinks. “Why wouldn’t I come?”
“She didn’t mean anything to you.”
“I’m not here for her,” Buck scoffs. “She is dead. I’m here for him.”
or
Chris is forced to grapple with the choice he made eleven years ago when his father comes back for Helena’s funeral.

Summary
That’s the problem.
He thinks.
He thinks, I love you, every morning he wakes up and finds Buck making breakfast.
He thinks, I’m in love with you, every time Buck grins at him at the dinner table at the fire station, a quip on the tip of his tongue and a blush high on his cheeks.
He thinks, I don’t want my life without you in it, just like this, forever, when Buck’s sitting on their couch in the hours after Chris has gone to sleep, and exhaustion claws at Eddie’s skin, begging him to follow in his wake. But Buck’s looking at listings, Buck’s looking at listings and their time is limited, and Eddie—
Eddie thinks.
Eddie thinks and thinks and thinks every little thing that matters; every momentous thought that at once feels stifling and freeing in the same fleeting moment.
He thinks, endlessly.
And, hauntingly—
He thinks Buck straight into her arms.
--
Or, Buck's new relationship is moving too fast and Eddie's not sure how to stop it.

Summary
"We’ve only got 5 minutes so let’s just do this.” He extends his hand out over the table, holding it in front of Buck's torso.
“Hi I’m Eddie, nice to meet you.”
Buck gives him a dead pan stare.
“Really Eddie? I know, as if we haven’t been best friends for the past 8 years.”
Eddie’s eyes roll with an amused sigh. “Come on Buck, just play into it.” They dart around the crowded restaurant, taking note of all the other paired up patrons, chatting away. “It’s not like we can swap around now anyways.”
His held out hand slightly wavers, till it feels the connection from Buck’s own, shaking it up and down slightly.
“Hi Eddie, I’m Buck.” His lips turn into a small smirk.
“I really like that outfit you’re wearing tonight Buck.”
“Oh, really?” Buck’s hands rub up his shirt, flattening out the fabric. Eddie tracks his every move. “My best friend helped me pick it out.”
“Well your best friend has good taste then. I think you look really handsome.”
The apple of Buck’s cheek’s flush pink. “Are you flirting with me right now Eddie?”
“Maybe I am. We are on a speed date after all. Isn’t that what people do on these?”
