Quiet nights like this are Amelia’s favourite.
She doesn’t get many of them nowadays, what with Scout and a shortage of surgeons and constant flights to and from Minnesota. The past three months have been hectic to say the least- trying to cure Parkinsons sure isn’t a walk in the park (not that she’d expected it to be) and being a single mom whilst flying across the country multiple times a week to work on a ground-breaking surgical procedure is kind of kicking her ass, if she’s being totally honest.
Here, in Minnesota with Kai Bartley working quietly next to her, Amelia finds she can just exist. Here, there are no screaming babies, no sickeningly sweet newlyweds, no ex-boyfriends waiting around every corner with puppy-dog eyes and a victim complex to match. Here, there is only the gentle tap of fingers on keyboards, the soft murmur of questions about stem cells and surgeries, the soothing presence of someone who is rapidly becoming important to Amelia beside her. It’s peaceful. Safe. Quiet.
And if Kai Bartley happens to be a big part of why nights like this are Amelia’s favourite, well. Nobody has to know about that.

Summary
