Summary
It was late one night during a training camp when Shinkai asked him a question. It was a simple one, really; his voice soft as to not wake the other occupants of the room. This training camp in particular had been tough, harder than either of them knew, but it was to be expected. University hadn’t been easy and pleasing the seniors even harder; the races became longer and the competition ferocious. They’d been on a losing streak for the past three races so this was an effort to turn their luck over. It was clear that neither Fukutomi and Shinkai were exactly welcome on the camp, and there was part of him that wondered if they even would’ve been invited if they didn’t have the money to pay for extra expenses.
Everyone else seemed to be asleep — it certainly was late enough — so Shinkai asked gently, “Juichi, what do you think you would’ve done if your father didn’t give you a bike?”
