It was hard, at first, to pinpoint just what about the bucolic lifestyle Xie Lian leads was so appealing to Hua Cheng. It’s picturesque, certainly, with cozy hutches and small terraces to yield the crops.
Sweet air, vivid colour, cold water.

Summary
He catches sight of a bright red bead nestled on a fallen leaf as if it was on a velvet pillow. Xie Lian approaches it with a soft hum— the luminous pearl is strung on a silver necklace chain and it seems like too expensive a trinket for a hunter to have casually left behind. He crouches next to it, picking up the leaf and cupping it carefully in his hands.
As he does, the sound of a rope winding tight makes his ears shoot up. But he’s too late to flinch away before the snare hidden beneath the leaves catches around his wrists, tightening as a nearby sapling springs back into place. It pulls away the slack, drawing Xie Lian’s hands up over his head, the necklace trapped between his palms. Try as he might, yanking on the rope doesn’t cause it to break.
When he looks closely at the rope around his wrists, he can see some thin glittering threads of metal in the weave, strengthening it. With a sigh, he sinks his weight down on his knees, trying to think of another way out.
