Sometimes it’s because of the arrow, sometimes it’s because I was too late and sometimes–” Wednesday pauses, throat tight and Xavier waits, patient as ever. Like he has all the time in the world for her. Like he’d wait forever, even, without her asking to. “–sometimes it’s because I’m the Hyde. But it doesn’t matter how the dream starts, you always die and tonight, when I woke up, I had to see you and make sure, with my own eyes, that you didn’t. Because apparently I’m quite fond of you and so the thought of your untimely demise makes me…uncomfortable.”

Summary
He shifts his weight, relaxed and incredulous, eyebrows shooting up. It makes his face even more gaunt. A cauldron of bats has taken up residence in the cage of her lungs. “I’m… glad you were getting some action while I was falsely accused.” He shrugs, giving off a nonchalant, yet hostile, impression. The bats hook their thumbs into her ribs. She has actually missed Xavier’s verbal barbs. There is even what she thinks might be an undercurrent of envy, still. The thought makes her dizzy.
“I’m not sure how much time we have,” she repeats, digging though her bag.
Xavier’s brow knits. “What are you doing?”
She extracts her lockpicking kit and unfurls it. “Take a guess.”
