“This didn’t happen,” JJ said, his eyes finally meeting hers.
Kie absorbed the words like a part of her had known they were coming all along. She looked away from JJ, out at the lit up manor behind him - the grand facade, empty inside.
JJ dragged a hand through his hair, looking at her intently. “You get - you get why this can’t happen, right?”
Kie could feel the whole night closing in on her, like the perfect encapsulation of the last year of her life - the snide remarks from the girls at the Kook Academy, the laughter from the boys. JJ, standing in front of her, slipping away. She couldn’t keep doing this. Couldn’t keep getting this close only to lose him again, over and over.

Summary
Ever since they got back from El Dorado, Kie touched JJ all the time. There was the brush of her knuckles against his arm as she passed him in the shop, the knock of her knee against his as they were sitting at the card table, both her palms on his face as she thumbed at a smear of grease on his forehead. JJ could remember them all. They played in a streamlined loop in his mind when he was zoned out or too high or trying and failing to fall asleep.

“So, you gonna tell us what got you throwing hands, huh?” JJ spoke, voice quiet and Kie felt his breath huff over her cheeks, he was so close. “Did someone insult the turtles?”
“C’mon, Rocky, let’s get you properly cleaned up.”“Jay, I’m fine,” she told him tiredly and she ignored how Sarah scoffed. She pulled at her shirt the same way John B had done, jerked when the fabric stuck to the drying blood that stained her side.
JJ laughed humourlessly, flashed his teeth at her in a grin that showed no mercy. “Like hell you are, Kie, now move before I make you.”
Kie gets herself into a fight and JJ is there to patch her up, of course. In fact, JJ's the only one she'll let help her. A collection of JJ and Kiara patching each other up after their daily disasters.

“You know, we’re in here for twelve hours.” Kie crossed her toes in her socks and stretched a few of her leg muscles so that she could test out how her blood was feeling. Doesn’t hurt too bad.
Won’t hurt enough to make her retract her earlier observation.
Definitely won’t hurt enough for her to not want JJ looking at her like that.
“Mm,” He opens his eyes again, and she stares at his lashes as the gravel in his voice makes her feel warm. “What are we gonna do?”
She knew that he was being dense on purpose. Knew by the smirk on his face that he wanted her to say it out loud.
“I'm sure we’ll think of something.”
