Summary
Dr. Kiramman steers her through the chaos and plants her in a chair. Does something to her arm that hurts like fuck, then drapes her in bags of ice and wraps her in a sling. Blinds her with a pen light—“Called it,” she mumbles when he confirms she’s concussed—and presses two pills and a warm mug into her hand. It smells herbaceous. Familiar.
“I brought the good stuff from home,” Dr. Kiramman confesses, and it takes her a moment to understand he means tea. “Extra honey for you. I know you haven’t acquired the taste.”
He’s right in that she only actually drank it once, the first time it was offered—the afternoon they spoke to the Council, several lifetimes ago. But she tasted it just this morning in Caitlyn’s mouth, grassy and sweet. So she pops the pills and takes a sip. Tries not to think about whether that terrified kiss over breakfast was their last. “I want to see her.”
After the war, Vi and Cait recover, and rebuild.

Summary
Caitlyn allowed herself to indulge in the sight of her. Taking in every detail, no matter how small. The messy, uneven growth of the short side of her hair. The slowly healing cut slicing its way through the tattoo on her cheek. Dark circles under wide eyes, affectionate and present, yet with a lingering sadness that made Caitlyn’s heart ache for her.
“How are you doing?” Caitlyn asked quietly.
The answer to her question was a slow, measured exhale. Silence, presumably while Vi debated how truthful of an answer to give. Her brows knit together in a frown while her eyes never left Caitlyn’s.
“You can be honest with me,” Caitlyn added, reaching across the narrow space between them to rest her hand on Vi’s forearm, stroking her thumb lightly across her skin. “If you’d like to.”***
When the smoke clears, Caitlyn and Vi do their best to navigate the way their lives have changed in the aftermath. The good and the bad. The weight of old wounds and the fresh sting of new ones. But Caitlyn makes a discovery that gives them an unexpected hope. And they find that, together, this new life might just be something they can both get used to.

But this is real. Almost terrifyingly real. It would have scared her, back then, made her reach out to test the illusion like she hadn’t ever dared to, knowing her knuckles would meet nothing but empty air. But this vision casts a shadow, catches the warm light of the bunker, sports tiny imperfections of exhaustion and effort her drunken dreams hadn’t ever seen. It’s real. She’s looking right at her.
“Sorry to say,” Caitlyn’s voice goes softer, lower, “You’ve grown a bit predictable.”
She blows air through her nose as the last syllable leaves her lips honey-smooth, and Vi somehow manages to recognize humour in her tone, but Caitlyn’s arms are still crossed, she isn’t moving, but-
She’s smiling, she’s gorgeous, she’s playful and she’s right here.
She’s here. She’s come back to me.
And Vi lunges to capture the lips of the girl who’d once held her hand through a safe and warm sleep.
In a bunker far below ground, Vi is lost, has lost it all- until those beautiful blue eyes find her again.

They’re shoulder to shoulder, legs sprawled forward. Just hours earlier Vi had shrugged like she didn’t care if the Piltie tripped into a ditch, now they’re talking in whispers like they’ve got their own little secrets. Vi laughs- laughs- and he hears it even from all the way down here, because it’s a sound he hasn’t heard in years and it might just make him cry.
Hope. Dangerous. But so very warm. The blue gemstone buzzes in his pocket like a reminder.
If nothing else, Vi deserves the reprieve. If he’s gotta rely on a Topside enforcer to give it to her, then he’ll let his younger self’s jaw drop in disbelief, just a little.//
