Yelan has always been accustomed to being alone and though she does enjoy the company of others, there is always the inevitable parting at the end of their gathering, where they would go their own ways and she would return to her humble abode, alone.
This is her sanctuary and refuge where she could just relax and unwind and just be alone.
It’s simple in stature. Furnished and filled solely for her and her alone. Nobody else.
As she's recovering from the illness that the dark ooze from the Chasm has inflicted on her, she finds that her refuge for one is changing, so slowly that she doesn't quite notice in the weakness of her illness. But Shenhe stays at her side, carefully nursing her back to health and Yelan thinks that there might be the the chance for something more.
Shenhe stays, without saying anything.
So Yelan doesn't say anything either.

It’s almost ironic, really—that the first thing she saw when her vision returned days later was the very expression she’d secretly hoped to see: Lauma’s relief, soft and unguarded, painted in the light of an early morning sun.
“What’s the damage?” Nefer had demanded, not daring to look in a mirror yet.

“Wait, Professor, you don’t know her?” one of Yanfei’s students exclaims. Normally she’d give him a sharp look for interrupting her like that, but he goes on before she can do even that: “This is Miss Yelan! She’s going to give a seminar later today about urban legends and the supernatural!”
This time Yanfei lets her eyebrows rise without holding back. “Oh,” she says. “I see. Right, I remember now.”
Because who is going to look at that seminar topic and not think of a con artist?
Yanfei is a professor at a university, and she has a feeling Yelan’s here for more than just a seminar. She just hadn’t been expecting to stumble into an entirely different plane of reality.
