“A star?” he whispered.
Eddie nodded slowly. “Yeah.”
“A silver one?”
“Yes.”
Theo turned to Buck, whispering louder. “Buck.”
“I know.”
“Buck.”
“Yeah.”
“He has a star.”
Buck’s expression shifted before he could stop it. Pride first. Then something warmer underneath, something Eddie did not have the emotional bandwidth to inspect too closely.
“I know,” Buck said softly.
Then, because Buck had apparently decided Eddie didn’t deserve to survive dinner, he added, “Eddie’s kind of a big deal.”

He paused, wondering if he should just deny the whole thing and make a comment about the sport that he couldn't remember the name of. But instead, he set his beer bottle down on the coffee table. It had about a quarter left. Eddie was sure he must have been the one drinking it, but he once again couldn't recall. It must have gotten lost in the foot tap, Buck's stretching of his muscles as he slapped the bottle caps off, and the movement of his Adam's apple while he sipped his own beer.

Buck and Eddie are friends. Friends have a couple beers, watch the game, and talk about their feelings. Friends do not start making out and grabbing each other's biceps. Maybe Buck and Eddie aren't friends.
