Summary
With a startled yelp, Gustave half-throws, half-drops his phone onto the floor. It clatters onto the rug, facing upward. The women both turn toward him, their expressions mirrored in confusion. Sciel is the first to avert her gaze, looking down at the phone…
Gustave smacks his socked foot on top of the phone screen, blocking Verso from view. He will not fumble this man’s dignity. What little he has left of it, anyway—what is Verso doing?
—
Or: It's been almost a year since Verso dropped off the face of the earth. Gustave has all but given up on trying to reach out to him, until Verso finally texts him for... advice. No problem, right?

“I want to adopt a dog,” Gustave exclaims.
…
Verso stares at him from behind his book. He narrows his eyes, then continues reading with a simple shake of his head. “No, you do not.”

Summary
“And shouldn’t Maelle have her brother back? After bringing back the rest of the world?”
“How would that make her different from…” Lune pinches her lips shut. Looks up at the ceiling, breathes. “It’s what Verso wanted. And he didn’t, he wasn’t–”
Sciel pushes herself up. “There were good moments. He was happy with us, a part of the expedition. If he could make his choice again–”
“No.” Something sneaks into Lune’s voice there, past the righteous anger. A choke, almost. “He wasn’t.”
“Okay,” Maelle says, tonelessly. She hasn’t moved from her stance, picture perfect. Back to an audience, angled away. Like a pianist. “Not today then.”

Lumiere lives. Verso dies. And every day, Maelle must decide to make it so.

Summary
For all that Clea hated other people’s depictions of her, especially her parents’, there is one portrait of her that still exists as it was originally painted, unsullied and untouched by her hand. It’s an old one, an imperfect portrait painted by an unpracticed hand, with none of Aline’s verisimilitude and carries none of Renoir’s gravitas.
What it has, instead, is all of Verso’s love.

“Why don’t you ever get your own room?” he finds himself asking, voice muzzy with exhaustion.
“You’re more interesting,” is all she says, and it’s the last thing he remembers before the darkness swallows him up and he sinks into it like tar, falling asleep again.
(Missing scenes & expanding on canon with short vignettes focusing on Sam/Fragile, and touching on some post-canon fix-it.)
