“It looks like we’ll be working closely together, then,” Caitlyn replied after retracting her hand. Vi was not going to complain about that. Well, not until…
“Yes, Dr. Kiramman will be coming on as an additional project manager to help take some of the load off for you and allow us to run a few bigger projects at once.”
At the recognition of the name, Vi’s brain glazed over.

After the not-so-friendly introduction between Vi’s face and the butt-end of a lobster’s musket, she could tell that the rest of her birthday was about to suck. She stumbled back upon impact, trying desperately not to lose her footing on the icy cobbles beneath her. She could feel the blood pouring out of her nose and the hotness in her face before her cheek, nose, and jaw exploded into pain. Her hands instinctively flew up into a guard and her eyebrows furrowed. She wasn’t going to let a cheap strike like that fly unanswered.

Vi couldn't believe what was being asked of her, and yet here she was: in desperate need of money and about to help out some random kid try and get his crush to notice him. She took a deep breath.
"Fifty bucks right now, take it or leave it."
"Deal!" He jumped up in the air, a little too excited, and extended his hand once he was back on Earth.
Vi shook it slowly.
"The name's Ekko, by the way." He beamed and fished out two twenties and a five from his pockets, and extended it out for her to take.
Vi took it apprehensively after the sudden burst of energy. With the money in hand, Vi made a quick attempt at conversation, before heading back to the bank. "And, uh… Who's the lucky lady?"
"Caitlyn," he said dreamily. "Caitlyn Kiramman."

Strapped for cash, Vi takes Ekko up on a deal to write Caitlyn Kiramman, the Queen Bee of Zaun High School, love letters. What Vi doesn't expect is for Caitlyn to actually write back.

“We have to stop meeting like this,” Vi intoned, even as her eyes drank in the other woman. She was paler, thinner than she’d last seen her - her usually cautious eyes were flitting wildly. Vi hadn’t seen her in at least two weeks - maybe more. In hindsight, it was unusual for them to not run into each other for that length of time.
“Are you alone?” Caitlyn asked.
“Not anymore,” Vi replied, raising an eyebrow.
“Who raised you?” Caitlyn snapped out like a whip, her body remaining half in the attic, half out.
“Vander Lanes,” Vi replied, her other eyebrow coming up, “are you feeling okay?”
Caitlyn exhaled tightly, and pushed herself fully into the attic, catching the door with her boot and pulling it closed behind her.
“No,” she said, simply. “I need your help.”
“Then you really aren’t okay.”
