Marlene glanced at the clock: half-past three. She should really go to bed and try to sleep; her future self would hate her for staying up so late. She threw a longing look at the girls’ staircase, and then looked at the defeated boy sitting next to her. She couldn’t leave him like this; sleeping on one of the couches in the common room, with only a blanket. The fire cast shadows on his face and she could see the dark bags under his eyes, one of which still had a yellow and purple bruise around it. She knew he could have gone to Madam Pomfrey to have it healed, but didn’t because he probably thought he deserved the pain.
