Summary
“Yor,” he said slowly, trying to quell the mounting sense of panic that was swirling in his gut. “Did Anya not tell you what type of auction this is?”
Yor tilted her head curiously. “Type of auction? What do you mean?”
Off to the side, a group of well-dressed individuals were beginning to line up. A few of them squealed excitedly to each other, trying to peek at the audience from behind the curtains. Loid felt queasy as he turned back to Yor.
“The final part of tonight’s charity event is going to be a date auction. That’s what you signed up for.”
She peered at him, gaze wide and innocent as a deer. “What’s a date auction?”
After a series of comically unfortunate misunderstandings lands Yor in an precarious position, Loid must swoop in to save the day at the one place he dreads the most: the date auction.
Operation Stryx, the Forger Family, and perhaps even his heart, are all at stake—if only he’ll admit it to himself.

“Could I have your number?” Her panicked thoughts were interrupted by Loid’s voice, which sounded a little higher pitched than normal. Yor froze. He cleared his throat. “I mean, I think it would be great for us to exchange numbers so we can talk about assignments and the reading. I haven’t taken kinesiology classes in a while so it’ll be great to pick your brain as a kinesiology major.” He nodded vigorously, crossing his arms in front of him.
After delaying her academic dreams to care for her younger brother, Yor Briar has finally found her footing as a first-year university student. With a reliable best friend and a new sense of purpose, what more could she ask for?
A lot more, she learns, when charming student-and-doctor extraordinaire Loid Forger walks into her life. Kind but laser-focused on his work, Loid keeps most people at a distance. He’s a mystery, and Yor can’t help but want to know more—if only he'll let her in.

Anya skipped over to them and tilted her head, curious. “Holding hands makes nail polish dry faster?” she asked innocently. Loid glanced down, jolting at the sight of his hands rubbing slow circles on Yor’s wrists. Immediately, he snatched his hands away as Yor’s face turned beet red.
Loid spends a quiet night at home painting his girls’ nails. His heart grows several sizes in the process.

He had his own motives for attending the charity gala as well, and for withdrawing to this secluded corner under the guise of taking a break. An event as grand as this drew powerful figures from all circles, and Loid would be remiss not to take this opportunity to size up potential connections for his mission. One friendly acquaintance could mean the difference between gaining access to the elusive Donovan Desmond and remaining in the dark.

We talked for hours under the moonlight, and when it was chilly, he gave me his coat.” A flush warms her cheeks. “You know, Anya, it was the strangest thing. I’ve known him my whole life, but it felt like, in that moment, my entire perception of him changed. Like I was meeting someone new. Does that make sense?”
Anya glances over at the boys’ table again. This time, instead of Ewen, she catches sight of someone else. A flash of burnished gold, the slope of a reddening cheek. Barely a second, yet his face brightens with a familiar pique— just from looking at her.
Anya scowls. “I guess I wouldn’t know,” she says.
