When Rei finds Volo, he doesn’t bring any of that retinue, that growing cavalcade of fools who think to stop him, the policemen and Champions and wayward bleeding-hearts too attached to this painful world.
He does find him, though. Rei can always find Volo, when he really wants to, even a hundred-some-odd years out from being able to make use of Ursaluna’s trustworthy nose for it.
Set in Pokemon Masters canon, mid Arceus Arc.

From the very first time Rei sees Volo, he can’t help himself. They have their introductions, polite smiles and greetings, and around the point where Volo challenges him to a battle, Rei is overcome.
“Oh, I need to ruin you,” he says to himself, under his breath, quietly.
—In short, it's a retelling of the plot of Pokemon Legends Arceus where Rei is completely smitten with Volo and they have a lot of sex.

Rei's been keeping Giratina on his team lately.
It'd truly, genuinely started innocent. It's a Pokemon he needs to study, so he'll take it out and bring it around to get a sense of how it moves, the way it lives. The first few times he let Giratina loose onto the field, it'd even been true.
The Pokedex entry comes together quickly, though. Legendary Pokemon always lend themselves well to careful study; it's not like he can go find another, and everyone knows as much, so simply observing the one individual has to be enough. When he approaches the pasture gates with Giratina out of its ball to be taken off the active roster, though, he... hesitates.
When he looks back at it, his eyes linger on the gold ridges lining its body, ringing its legs, and in the back of his head there's an image of blond hair. The grey of its carapace—a single silver eye that flashes with light. He can't do it.

He's not kidding, but you can see in Volo's eye that his heart isn't in this. He looks on the brink of tears as he commands you, standing in this outfit you've never seen him wear before.
"You don't want that, Volo," you say carefully.
"Now," he orders. You feel the words pull at your limbs, the power Volo has as your summoner guiding your soul in a way you've long grown accustomed to.

It’s a few decades into the calendar’s second millennium, and Volo is in Johto. He’s having a simple meal at a restaurant, half-watching the television nattering away in the corner of the room. There’s a new Champion in Sinnoh, it proclaims! Someone’s dethroned Cynthia! That’s interesting enough to start paying attention. Cynthia had grown to have a particular distaste for her uncle Volo in recent years, but he had experience with her strength as a battler, and it really was prodigious.
The camera finds its way to the new Champion, and everything stops in that moment. Volo’s chopsticks slip from his fingers and clatter against his plate. His breathing halts, his heart skips. “Lucas,” the announcer calls him. But that’s Rei.
