Sarah's gaze settles on the photo strip of Pope and JJ that's propped up on his bedside table.
“The way you talk about JJ, it’s…”
Pope’s heart sinks, through his chest and his stomach and his legs all the way to the hardwood floor below.
“I mean, I just… was wondering if, like, there’s something there?”
“I’m not-“ he begins to say, but he can’t bring himself to complete the lie.
“Right. Sorry.”
“I’m not-“ he tries again, but he thinks of JJ’s warm hand on his back, the way JJ’s eyes glow in the sun, how they sparkle mischievously even when he isn’t up to anything. He thinks of JJ and his cheek burns where JJ's kissed him more times than he can count and he starts to cry.
-Two weeks after the Pogues are saved from the island, Sarah sleeps over at Pope's house.

It wouldn’t be such a problem if she didn’t have such a massive crush on Dina, a crush that sometimes feels like it might be going somewhere when their eyes meet or Dina does stuff like reaching out to fix her ponytail for her, which sends little sparks of electricity throughout her entire body. They even linked pinkies during the last movie night, when Joel had opted out to go play poker with Tommy at the bar so she hadn’t been sitting next to him for once.
She wants to tell him so badly, wants to include him in this part of her life. She knows from other kids that they don’t usually tell their parents who they like, at least not until they’re dating or something, but Joel’s the person she wants to tell everything to. He’s always her first stop after a successful hunt or a good grade on a test or the highest score at archery practice. She wants to tell him about Dina, wants to be able to bring Dina around him. She likes being at home more than she likes most things, and she wants to be able to have Dina over in the place that she likes the most. She wants to pull Dina into game night with them and Tommy and Maria, wants to slowly knit her into their little family.

Her ears are ringing when they pull her away. Joel took the brunt force of the flash bang, swinging her around like she weighed nothing to curl around her, but she’s just the slightest bit wobbly when they try to take her away from him, still on the ground.
Doesn’t stop her from screaming for him, though.
Even half out of it, Joel always answers when she calls, and she sees him trying to stagger onto his knees, calling back for her.
Then a soldier hits him on the back of the head.

“Hey Joel,” she says after a long moment.
“Mm?” He asks, still scanning the dark night around them.
“Can sheep live where it’s warm?” The last word is stretched out by a yawn.
“Not sure.” He shifts his weight and rests one hand on her back so she won’t tip off. When he’s done, he leaves it where it is, rubbing slowly back and forth. She’s almost out, he can tell, lulled by warmth, and rubbing her back like this was always the secret to getting Sarah to conk right out. She’s been restless the past few nights, and he knows she needs to get some actual quality sleep in, not that he has much room to talk on that front.
“You should have some tropical sheep,” she says with a yawn, closing her eyes, body relaxing against him now that she’s warm. “Because this snow stuff is bullshit.”
