She frowns.
The ad is for a relief lighthouse keeper. She tentatively scrolls down to look at the duties and requirements, fully expecting to find that she’s unsuited for the job.
Except she’s kind of… perfect for it?
Unmoored, a little lost, and always impulsive, she thinks fuck it and spends the next three hours fixing her resumé, digging for her certification details, and writing an overly enthusiastic cover letter.

“Jesus Christ!” Beatrice shouted.
“No, no. Just Ava is fine,” the woman tilted her head in a toothy smile.
“What?”
Ava laughed as she took a step closer to Beatrice, “You look scared. I’m so sorry. I didn't mean to have you see me. Are you okay?”
“I’m Beatrice.”
Ava laughs again, loudly this time, her face unable to hold in her smile. Beatrice finally registers the question she was asked: “I mean, yes, I’m quite alright. Are you? I mean, am I imagining you?”
“Oh you’re imagining me? What am I wearing in your imagination?” Ava teased.
“What? No. I. Well, I mean” Beatrice stumbles over her words for the first time in her life.
Ava saves her from further embarrassment. “Nah, unless you’ve been here imagining me for a few years, I’m actually here. Well, not here here but well, you understand.”
Beatrice nodded, because sure it made perfect sense for a ghost to not be here here.

They’d only known each other for three days, but they were six and seven years old, so three days felt like an eternity. “If you insist,” Beatrice said, making her voice sound more formal than usual. This was, of course, a very important matter.
“Yay!” Ava grinned, “at least I’ve got you. Jillian’s gonna have a baby soon, so she’s gonna forget all about me.”
“I’m sure that’s not true,” Beatrice took the ring pop and slipped it on her finger. “You’re rather unforgettable.”
“Really?” Ava asked, giving Beatrice a gap-toothed smile. “Do you think you’ll remember me even when you’re forty?”
It was unimaginable for Beatrice to ever be that old, surely by then she’d have figured out the secret to staying young forever, but in the unlikely event that it actually did happen, she knew she’d still remember Ava Silva.
They were married by a big oak tree, sharing a kiss that they’d both come to forget.

“Thank you, ma’am,” he said, the cookie in his mouth muffling his speech as he stuck out his hand, vaguely registering that these were the first words he’d spoken to Beatrice. “Are you going to tell my Mum?”
Beatrice’s lips ticked up at the ends, “heavens no. Ava told me that the two of you had a competition of who can steal the most cookies from the jar by the end of the week.” She smiled at that, a small one, but it was real. “Consider me on your side, Mr. Salvius.”
He beamed as they shook hands, “pleasure doing business, Ms. Xin.”

“Don’t worry, Bea,” Ava said, her eyes softening, “I–I know it won’t work. I’m just going a little stir crazy with nothing to do all day. Jillian cancelled my tutors, she says I need to focus on getting better, which we both know isn’t gonna happen.”
Beatrice pursed her lips, “let me help, at least.”
“What?”
“You’re trying to fold a thousand cranes in–in three–”
She wouldn't say it, she couldn’t, she didn't have to. Three months. The words unspoken filled the room, harsh, suffocating, all-consuming. Three months and Ava was gone. It wasn’t enough time, it would never be enough time.
