    Summary

It’s a cruel, twisted joke from the universe, really, but it’s just the way it is. Everyone’s born with a date on their ribs — they call it their Mark Day (cute) — and on that day, it’s actually very simple, the destined love of your life and the other half of your soul ceases to join you in the land of the living. Fun, right?

No, Eddie doesn’t think so either. But that’s probably because today is his Mark Day, and most people are a bit crabby on their Mark Day. We try not to hold it against them.

Or, Eddie's soulmate is going to die today, and that's fine, really. He's never met her. It's just a cruel coincidence that Buck is struck by lightning on today of all days.

    Bookmarker's Notes

One of the most delightful things I've ever read on this site.
The humorous narration perfectly complemented the excitement of the events, clearly a work to be read repeatedly.
Thank you to the author for sharing this.

    Summary

“You don’t have to,” Buck says quickly. “You could just leave it. Don’t look.”

Eddie glances up at him, and they both know without saying it that he isn’t going to let this go.

There’s no way he can look away now, not after seeing the way Buck reacted.

“Or maybe just not now,” Buck says softly, stepping closer, his hand settling gently over the screen like he can shield Eddie from what’s on it. “Maybe leave it for now. You’re not… Eddie, you’re not doing well right now. I’ve been so worried about you and this—” his voice catches, “—you… Eddie, please don’t. Just leave it.”

It stings to hear the worry out loud, even if he knew it was there.

He wants to do what Buck says, he wants to trust his friend and give him what he’s asking.

    Buck never asks for anything.

Eddie moves Buck’s hand aside gently, giving it a brief squeeze. “Can’t do that, Buck.”

Or; After Christopher leaves for El Paso, Buck decides that he and Eddie should trace their family trees to keep Eddie’s mind occupied elsewhere. The results lead Eddie to face a family secret.

    Summary

    They were trapped.

Fire hadn’t broken through yet, but it was coming. Buck could feel the heat pushing in, wrapping around them like a warning. The smoke thickened, clawing at their throats, painting the walls with a haze of panic.

“So…” Eddie’s voice cut through the haze, rough around the edges but maddeningly calm. “You wanna talk about it now?”

Buck turned slowly, disbelief etched across every exhausted line of his face, and he hoped his deadpan glare said it all. He didn’t need to ask what Eddie was referring to.

No, he didn’t want to talk about how he accidentally told his best friend he loved him just hours earlier.

He’d rather let the fire take him.

A season 9 two-part opening emergency, in which a group of hijackers takeover Station 118.

    canon in my mind

It's so beautiful and spectacular the way it was written. how the story developed not just about Buck and Eddie, but about the whole 118 as a family.
I cried many times because this fic managed to be so emotional and touching. It's definitely one of the best 9-1-1 fics I've ever come across

    Summary

Eddie listens to the voicemail later. Buck sounds like he’s at a grocery store, absentmindedly talking into the phone. “Oh, I guess you’re with your sisters. Sorry to miss you. I just wanted to tell you about this call we had last night, but I gotta hear your reactions, so, later. Okay, uh, I guess I’ll just call back. Or text.”

It ends abruptly, without a goodbye. Eddie replays it a second time, closes his eyes as he sits in the truck. For a moment, he can pretend Buck is sitting in the passenger seat next to him. For a moment, Eddie is back in Los Angeles and his best friend is dragging him through the grocery store.

The voicemail ends, Eddie opens his eyes, and the fantasy breaks. Eddie is still in El Paso, parked in front of the house he’s renting, and there’s no one in the passenger seat with him.

Eddie moves to Texas. Buck moves into his house. There's a love story somewhere in here.
