A distinctive ringing found a comfortable spot in the back of Atsushi’s head. Byakko roared in pain. His fingers bloody in his imagination where he continuously mutilates his own face in self-punishment.
He should have been able. Atsushi failed yet again. A meaningless death, a preventable death.
Nonetheless, a funeral approaches, unavoidable. He just has to bite his tongue and go, even though the memory of the man’s chest lying motionless haunts him in sleep and in wake. He just has to attend. He just has to be there, to bit his tongue and his eyes to stop himself from crying, and try not to think of the headmaster, and not throw himself off a bridge and pray to the God Atsushi doesn't think is real that his healing wont kick in before his brain has turned to mush. Atsushi thinks he can do that.

Literally the only fic ive cried to (MULTIPLE TIMES) what a talent it is to harbour the skill of whump and not employ it for the ending. What a ride
Also the portrayal of rape/sexual assault here and a victims mindset prior/during/after it is so spot on atleast in my (comparitively limited lol) experience

"I’m not gonna do anything you don’t want me to,” he told Akutagawa gently, “I would never do anything to you that you didn’t want me to, okay? I just want to help, that’s all. I’ll be gentle. I—I’ll make you feel good, I promise.” His heart was hammering in his chest again.
Akutagawa’s response comes out in shaky sobs. “I can’t, Jinko—you don’t understand—my body—”
“Is it because you’re sick? I’ll be careful, I promise. I just want you to get better, Akutagawa."
The other man shivered at the usage of his name, and didn’t say anything. His wrists were small and bony, and Atsushi could wrap his fingers all the way around them. He stared down at Akutagawa’s hands; his carefully manicured fingers were trembling, the callouses on his palms seeming almost out of place against his porcelain flesh. Without thinking, he lifted Akutagawa’s hand, and kissed his knuckles gently.
Akutagawa stared at him with disbelief, his face still a pretty pink, lips parted. Atsushi met his hazy grey eyes.
“It won’t ever go away if you don’t let someone help,” Atsushi said gently, “Please let me help, baby.”
i.e. atsushi fucks aku so he doesn't die
