Gently, the mage patted the back of Apo’s hand, as if soothing someone after a great loss. “I was hoping you would say, ‘because they’re already taken,’ but everybody’s different.”
“Well, yeah, of course,” Apo scoffed, yanking away. “A person that already has a partner couldn’t even be considered—”
She went still.
“No,” she whispered. “No, there’s no way you’re suggesting that.”

Summary
Will Byers had a plan: Survive football season, graduate and leave Indiana behind for California-- where normal life feels possible and his mother's laugh doesn't feel like a memory. He just needs to pretend, keep his head down, his secrets buried and do NOT by any means make things harder than they already are.
Mike Wheeler also had a plan: Win debate nationals, graduate with a 4.0, avoid his father's impossible expectations and absolutely do NOT think about why his heart stutters every time a certain football captain looks at him like he's the only person in the room.
