They’re shoulder to shoulder, legs sprawled forward. Just hours earlier Vi had shrugged like she didn’t care if the Piltie tripped into a ditch, now they’re talking in whispers like they’ve got their own little secrets. Vi laughs- laughs- and he hears it even from all the way down here, because it’s a sound he hasn’t heard in years and it might just make him cry.
Hope. Dangerous. But so very warm. The blue gemstone buzzes in his pocket like a reminder.
If nothing else, Vi deserves the reprieve. If he’s gotta rely on a Topside enforcer to give it to her, then he’ll let his younger self’s jaw drop in disbelief, just a little.//

Caitlyn did her absolute best to keep her expression perfectly innocent.
“I don’t think so. We don’t have any group projects together right now.”
…Wait. Was this flirting? Was she flirting ? Her brain was about to short-circuit.
Clearly, Vi hadn’t expected that response. She lowered her voice :
