There is a chapter in "Emma" where Franck Churchill and Jane Fairfax are left alone in Miss Bates' small sitting room. A few minutes pass, and when Emma, Miss Bates and the other guests come back, Jane and Frank are kind of flustered.
In a Facebook book club where we are all re-reading "Emma", someone asked if Frank and Jane had been secretly making out during this time. And everyone said "YES, YES, so much yes, Frank and Jane were TOTALLY making out."
So I had to write this.

“Nix,” he says, voice low in warning.
“Relax, Dick,” he answers, equally softspoken. “It’s all a game. Don’t you see? None of it really matters.”
It matters to me, he wants to say… because Nix has never held him without it mattering, has never caressed him without every sensation engraving itself permanently into Dick’s memory. Nix has never… not mattered to him. Some part of Dick, an small yet insidious murmur, wonders when he became insignificant to him.
