When your team (your kids) partners off and get married and you’ve been Hokage for seven years, the schedule begins to shift. You find yourself looking at “retirement options” on the Friday afternoons you used to review the Academy lesson plans. You don’t think you placed these papers on your desk. You wouldn’t have.
You know you were the one who pulled the prisoner’s files that sit knowingly at the bottom of your “retirement” pile. You can’t lie about that to yourself. It’s been eight years and you haven’t visited him at all, what kind of a person— friend— lover— can you call yourself?
None of them, you think, blinking at your face in a mirror. Nothing.

Summary
Though still glaring at Kakashi, Kabuto eventually stills in his arms. He’s wary; a spooked horse that unfortunately lacks the hooves to do some damage. Well, not really. Kakashi knows that Kabuto could kill him right now. Then again, Kakashi could do the same. It’s a weird game they play. Kakashi’s almost forgotten about the danger; their own mortality and their hands already drenched in countless rivers of blood.
