“I want you to live a long life, Reiner,” Bertholdt says quietly, hand delicately running through blonde fringe. “Be healthy, grow old, be happy. Promise, okay?”
Of course, Reiner doesn’t so much as twitch, still in a deep slumber. Bertholdt’s kind of glad, since he doesn't dare to pour his heart out when the other is awake.
“I don’t care if you never look my way again, if it means you’ll be happy. I don’t need anything other than that.”

Bertholdt thinks he’s no longer Reiner’s best friend and tries his hardest to accept that. He is not succeeding.
Reiner hopelessly pines after his best friend in the whole damn world and tries to keep it on the down low. He is not succeeding.
